Baby food

I heard that you were not supposed to make your own baby food carrots? Did I hear wrong or only get half it? Confused! Can anyone explain?

Hmm...I have never heard anything like that! I can't imagine why not--maybe someone else knows?

I have read this and I cannot remember the reason why. That said, I've given my son real carrots since he started eating them and have had no problem. Probably whatever is in them that they shouldn't have is in such minute quantities it wouldn't be a concern unless it was something they ate all the time.

I just read that as well - supposedly you're supposed to avoid making your own baby food out of fresh carrots because they have nitrates in them. Allegedly the commercial baby food does not have it - I find that really hard to believe.
I made all my dd's baby food from fresh fruits and veggies - she loved carrots. I guess I'll use organic carrots from the natural food store with the next baby, but I really don't see buying commercial baby food!

The way I heard it was that you are not supposed to use the water that you boil the carrots in to add to the mush to make it more liquidy...the carrots themselves are ok.

I saw where I read it. It was the nitrate issue, but said that by 9 months it's not a concern.

I've heard it's nitrates too, and supposedly it has to do with the levels in the soil they're grown in. I think this applied to beets too. all commercial baby food is tested to ensure that it is within "safe" limits. . .

that said, I've always made my own. but, for carrots and beets, I offer really muchy chunks rather than spooning it in. That way, she gets to enjoy them, but in the end, only consumes a few by the time we scrape all the squished ones off of her . . .
