Now that he's in, I have questions.

I swear, I'm the clueless parent with the smart kid.

I think the EPGY website is confusing to make sure that the parents are capable of being involved. Fortunately, I have you all as tutors.

I just paid. *gulp*. We don't qualify for financial aid. I'm so hoping that he loves this and takes off. It feels like such a huge unknown right now.

What, if anything, will I receive? The whole process seems so vague. I guess smart people don't need hand-holding.

I guess my question is, now that I've paid, how will this all go down?

log into his account first, and see if there is a guide you can download. I believe there is. If so, READ IT!

see if this link works: Stanford EPGY Web-based Course Page (I got that by logging into Nate's account, then clicking on the course title, and there is a link to the manual there). Make sure you certify your computer before you let him go - it is really frustrating if it's not working right. We had to redo that on Nathan's new computer - I ended up having to call and get help.

Once the day of his enrollment period starts, log into his account. Click 'run the course' and sit with him and help him get started.

Nathan has the most 'trouble' 'getting' how to use the geometry things. They build objects on the screen, and he still is having difficulty sometimes remembering how to make the program do what he wants it to do.


I was just thinking... which child is this that you have enrolled? I wonder if our boys would like to have an online buddy? Maybe chat with sometimes with a webcam? I've been trying to come up with some ideas of how to integrate technology into what we are doing - and it would be great if I could find someone else who was wanting to do similar. I'm getting the Lego Mindstorms set for the kids this summer, and I want to use that - have them come up with a presentation, and present it online to someone. I was thinking my mom, but it would be cool to pair up with another family who might be interested - and have both of the kids build something, then present it to the other family. Sort of a 'look what we did'. Would you be interested?

Yes!! I am getting lego mindstorms too. Airon has been dying to do that as his monthly program.

Our ds's are the same age. I think they might even share a birthday or close to it (11-11-97). I know Shannaleah has a son with ds's exact birthday.

Airon probably wouldn't be a super penpal, but he might warm up to it if they are working on a project and sharing it with each other.

This could be fun.

Stacy, they sent me a "how to get started" email about 3 days before the first. But basically that email just said what Heather did.

The reports are cool. I sit with Erik a lot of times, because I love watching him do it, but if I didn't, I can look at a report after each session, telling me what grade level he's at in each area. I can also look at each problem that he did. Anyway, it's fun.

Yep, Nate is 11/16

Do you guys have a webcam? If so, they could use Yahoo IM to webcam chat, along with the call feature, so it is like a teleconference! How cool would that be? The kids are using that with dh right now - it's so nice that they can talk to him a little bit even though he is half way around the world. Right now they are drawing things and showing each other (lol).

Those reports are so cool. Nathan especially likes watching the line graph go up and up. he's almost done with 4th grade now (I think he's at 4.75). He's excited to be moving up.

It's funny how they do it, too. For several sessions, he ONLY did integers, until he was 1.9 grade level. But then, instead of cracking 2, all the other areas started getting more problems (and all of the integer problems stayed at the same level, even though he hadn't missed anything.) Now, every thing is 1.9. He didn't do it today because he was tired, but I'm thinking next session he'll hit 2.0 in at least some of the areas. It's still all really easy for him, so I'm hoping that grade 2 presents some concepts that challenge him.
