EPGY update - 1 month
Nathan started the EPGY 3-4th grade math last month. He's enjoying it, and it's covering some things I hadn't even thought of covering (mainly sets of things and numbers). He had to start at the beginning of the program - so at the 3rd grade level. As of this morning he was at 3.99 grade level. He works for at least 45 minutes 3-5 days a week. He has had to ask me for help a couple of times, but usually it's wording he doesn't understand.
I'm really impressed and glad that we took the chance on it. It's a lot of money, but it's the ONLY thing that has really challenged his thinking, and presented other ways of thinking. He is still working through both Teaching Texbooks Math 7 and MUS Epsilon. But he really loves EPGY.
Nathan gets an email every week from his mentor at Stanford. He walks Nate throguh problems that he missed, which is neat. There are also online classes - but the 3/4 th grade one meets at 6 am our time... and Nate is NOT an early riser.
I love that it's taking him at his own pace, and walking him through the understanding of concepts. Even though he already knew how to multiply by multiple digits, he is learning the distributive law and how it relates... taking small steps up to the traditional way of multiplying multiple digits. He's gaining a deeper understanding of numbers and how they relate.
If you are thinking about doing this, I highly suggest it. Adam is next... but I think I will wait until the end of this school year. He is doing well with MUS, and I think that by the time we are done with this school year he will be able to enter the 3/4th grade program.
I'm anxious to see how Nate does with the 4th grade benchmarks and concepts. He says he thinks he will be done with it in 2 months. I don't think so... lol
