just wondering how everyone's year is going ~ and what you are looking forward to this year!!
we took quite a bit of time off when the baby was born and are gearing up to school full force this coming week. dh starts school wednesday so we thought we'd do that too -- though tucker is already begging to start monday.
my biggest goal is to get griffin started. i'm going to do little hands to heaven with him ~ it's his speed and his style.
tucker is going to continue abeka 1 spelling and LA; prima latina, apologia astronomy, mystery of history, and horizons math. we'll do this through june or july and then take some time off before starting new stuff.
he's reading extremely well -- 3rd-4th grade level. and thank goodness he stilll loves learning. we're in a huge homeschool co-op here at seminary so he does missions, biology, and civil war with them. he's having a great time. we do bi-weekly field trips as well. so far we've been to the planetarium, the zoo, the aquarium, and the children's museum.
what's your gifted kiddo up to this year??

We really like Little Hands to Heaven--I'm doing it wtih Anders. Although your post reminded me that I'm doing it--we forgot about it for the last 2 months or so. Oops!
Well, we took a big shift this fall. Erik is now going to preschool 3 days a week, plus he goes to my Community Bible Study with me once a week, where they have a preschool-like kids' program. He's doing great--thriving. We've shifted from homeschooling plans to sending him to school plans, and so I've officially entered the "afterschooling" world. Right now we actually haven't been doing that much, I guess we've taken about a month's break from anything "formal". He does math constantly, though, and he loves spelling time and reading anythign he can about the planets.
Officially we're still doing Sonlight Core 1, Singapore Math 2A (we're nearly done with it and ready for 2B), and apologia astronomy.
Oh, Erik's also in a music class he takes with his grampa, and he's learning a lot of theory through that class. Anders starts next week, we're very excited for him, because he is a music lover. Erik also took a soccer class this fall, but I don't have him signed up for any classes yet for the winter. I should get on that.
Being able to read anything and everything really lessens my NEED to do a lot with Erik. So now I spend 1-2 hours a day reading to Anders, who is different than Erik in so many ways, yet so much alike in others.
I guess our biggest thing has been trying to figure out schools to which we wanted to apply for K for next year, and thinking about how Erik will fit into that environment.

Well, I am realizing I have a house full of math kids. Lauren wouldn't have been alowed to start K this fall, but she is about half way through what a first grader should know (according to standards based education) math-wise. Sooo... only one of the kids is working on grade/age level.
Nathan really wants to be a glass blower and never be over 10 years old. So he gets one more birthday, then he's done. He cracks me up. Anyway, we're really looking into possibly getting a small torch setup and help him learn to make glass beads. I'm also thinking about starting some stained glass. He would love to make some patterns for that. I wish we had our own house (military housing) with some more room to set those up permanently. But... I think we can get a small place worked out.
We're working our way through Apologia Botany and I think we're going to move on to Astronomy after that.
Adam is doing really well. He's reading his way through a collection of Curious George books - he loves Curious George. He's had a difficult time with our last move (November) so I am really sitting back and seeing what he needs.
We started using a little schedule and it's helping each of the kids. I did 6 weeks worth starting last week. We got EVERYTHING on our lists completed last week... and didn't work past lunch time! It was great. Each child has his schedule on a different color paper and keeps track of what he has done. It's helped with their organization needs.
Games... we got lots of games for Christmas. So they are all playing a variety of games. Strategy, fun, math, language related.
We didn't do much in 2006 because of pregnancy, baby, etc... and had decided to just stop altogether and wait a few years.
Well it didn't work out, Vidura was missing it, so we're back into it.
We're hoping to save up enough to get the Abeka DVDs for next school year (august 2007)
We'll get 1st grade as he still needs to work on handwriting and "sitting down" lol.
We're finishing singapour math 2a, and reading reading reading, a lot of stories and fun stuff.
I'm really hoping the Abeka dvds will work out for us, as I'm getting a bit burnt lately and still adjusting to new baby and lots of changes at home.

Aj is in PS, but I work with him a ton on extra stuff at home. We've just started doing reserach on egyptology in anticipation of the Tutankhamun (King Tut) exhibit at the Franklin Institute.
Dh does all the math stuff, becuase I am NOT a math brainiac, LOL! So I can't tell you anything there

Thank you for posting, as we're looking to send Erik to school next year, I like to have that input from others who have. When do you do most of your work? We like to think that we'll be able to do stuff with Erik in the am, as he gets up by 6 every day, and is freshest. But we also don't want to tire him out too much before school, either.
We've changed gears and are mostly unschooling (at least for the past 2 months).
Izzi just turned 11 and is in 5th/6th grade. She was recently tested at at 14th grade level for english and 10th for math. She is loosely doing Aleks.com math and I think we'll start beyond FIAR. We spend lots of time with violin/jr. symphony/ballet.
Griff just turned 8 and is playing violin too. He's mostly reading (at an 8th grade level)...but prefers easier books. I am going to sign him up for time4learning.com and he loves spellingtime.com. Also art classes.
Today we read "I have a dream" speech and each child made their own "I have a dream" speech. CUTE!

Checking in here with Sam, newly 7. He would be in first grade if he was in school. We are still following a child-led learning approach. He's thriving.
The biggest changes in the past year have been physical milestones (ditching the bike training wheels, swimming). I think they have taught him a lot about struggling to learn something, and the feeling of accomplishment once you've struggled hard to achieve something. So many things come easily to him that it took until now to really push through those issues.
We are involved in a few scheduled activities for the first time. Homeschool gym is once a week for 2.5 hours of swimming, ball play, and playground games. It's also my only daytime break during the week, so it's good for both of us. Individual swimming lessons once a week, which have been great--he now swims crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke. Spanish immersion classes start this week and happen once weekly. So we have 3 things every week scheduled. We're used to not having anything recurring scheduled, so this is a big change for us.
History is still a major focus, and math is gaining more and more of his interest. I'd put him at about 5th or 6th grade for math work, which we do without a curriculum. He asks about something, I show him, and he practices it until I can tell he's mastered it. I'm thinking about getting a curriculum for middle school math but haven't decided about that yet.
A recent obsession with card games showed me that he probably does have a photographic memory. I had suspected as much from various reading cues, but wasn't positive. He can browse through a stack of 20-30 cards for a minute, put them away, and then remember all of them (suit and rank) 30 or 40 minutes later. Rob keeps telling me I should take him to Atlantic City.
Theresa, we just got our Tut tickets for the end of February and we're very excited. We also plan to go see Amarna at the Penn museum--had you heard about that? It's also supposed to be very good and would be a great way to extend/enhance the whole Egypt thing.
My oldest ds is 8 and in 2nd grade at our local ps. We do afterschooling with him for enrichment. He is finishing up Saxon 54(he will be done with it next week) and we are also studying European Geography. We will be starting Story of the World 2 shortly.
I am so glad to see others with kids in ps, but afterschooling also.
