Thinking about going veg, can you help me?
Seriously thinking about vegetarianism/veganism, especially for the kids and me (hopefully some of it will rub off on DH). It keeps coming back to me that this is perhaps where we need to be. At the least, I'd like to cut our meat way down so that we can afford to eat grass fed/organic, etc. when we do eat it. Dairy is another hard one, and perhaps if we cut way back, we can afford raw now and then. I'm just not sure how to go about it. We eat a fairly whole foods diet now, but not necessarily much of a variety of veggies. DH hates beans. We don't care much for soy, except soy milk, which I am a bit scared of. I don't think my body proccesses it well (we did a non-dairy stint about 2 years ago). I don't know whether I should give my kids tofu, etc. or not. We do love our milk--ice cream, cheese, pudding, all of it!
I also make yogurt and yogurt cheese. Is yogurt in a different class than other dairy? Or does it need to go too?
I intend to do this in a very laid back fashion, just very gradual. There are no current health issues that would make it such that we need to limit these items completely or right away, so I'm hoping to change our diets subtley (I might change mine more quickly, since I am inclined to do that, but I'd kind of like to change the boys' diets without them figuring it out, KWIM?) so that there is no feeling of deprivation.
Any tips? I have Marilou Henner's Healthy Life Kitchen and Healthy Kids, but they rely heavily on soy subs, and I really don't think we want to go that route.
