hmm... Vegan??

I am a vegitarian. But I was just curious about veganism. Why are you a vegan? Are cows and chickens really treated creuly when we raise them to give us milk and eggs? If I were to become vegan what all would I have to stop eating? Milk and Dairy, eggs, honey, ....what else??? Just wondering, thanks

Why are you a vegan? I am a Vegan both for health and for the animals. Too much dairy or meat (we'll I feel any) is unhealthy. It leads to bypass surgery and adds to the risk of colon cancer.

Are cows and chickens really treated creuly when we raise them to give us milk and eggs? Cows are for giving calfs milk. Chicken lay eggs to give new life (I will eat eggs if they are humanely raised). Is keeping cow indoors in its own feces cruel? Is keeping a cow in a sunless, fresh airless life and pumping it full of hormones and antibiotics to make it bigger, produce better cruel? Is debeaking a chicken cruel? Is keeping it caged, never to touch the ground cruel? Is starving it because it does not produce forth eggs cruel? That is what happens.

If I were to become vegan what all would I have to stop eating? You can eat humane eggs, but it is hard to prove that they are. Not eating the milk for health reasons makes it well worth it. Honey is optional I feel but some Vegans are totally against it. It also means buying no leather, wool or silk, but there again it falls under the personal reasons aspect. (No flaming, please) but we have playsilks and I do have waldorf dolls because I super dislike plastic but no leather, no wool clothes or bedding unless previously bought. But definitly for me, no leather! It is unhumane to not shear a sheep so if someone local who I can go to their home and see how well they treat their animals and how careful and gentle they are about shearing their sheep, I would buy a wool scarf or whatever from them.

Check out Vegan Outreach for more info. If you don't already, you would probably want to get a B12 supplement though (we take one).

Wow! Hmm.... I had no idea they debeaked them. I could get a couple chickens and raise them in the backyard. I love chickens, I have raised them before. But I doubt my husband would go for it lol. Well, this would require much thought. I'm gonna think it over.

Yep. Hemp is a good sustainable choice and there are lots of other choices.

www.mooshoes.com has lots of cool shoes

Being vegan is not a sentence of deprivation!! Instead think of it as an awakening...for the animals, for the planet, and for you and your family. Its amazing that once you become vegan your culinary horizons open up. Honestly my diet was boring being a meat-eater...and even being just veg. You learn to use a lot of unique ingredients, try new recipes, and explore new places looking for vegan stuff. Its really quite fun.
Good luck w/ your journey to cruelty-free eating/living. I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have
Blessings,

IMO......veganism is not only about "diet". It is a life choice. To tread on this earth as lightly as possible, harming as little as possible. To use/consume no animal products. As mentioned above; leather, wool and silk are things that most vegans will not purchase. Pangea has a wonderful selection of vegan products, both food products and non-food products. I highly recommend the vegan sweets donuts.....they ROCK!

I have never heard of a vegan who eats eggs of any kind. I suppose if I knew of source of a completely humane egg production, that would be acceptable (although, I personally never did care for eggs)

Why are you a vegan? I went from ovo/lacto vegetarian to strict vegetarian and then to veganism. It was a natural progression for me. The more I read and learned, the more I felt it was the right thing for me to do. That said, I do not live in a vegan household. Dh and ds are both non-vegan. I feel it is a choice that I have made for myself and one I will leave up to James to make on his own. He is mostly vegetarian. Dh is a full blown omni.

Are cows and chickens really treated creuly when we raise them to give us milk and eggs? YES

If I were to become vegan what all would I have to stop eating? Milk and Dairy, eggs, honey, ....what else??? Any animal product....including milk, dairy, eggs and most vegans choose to eliminate honey. Also, if you don't already, sugar that is processed through bone char.
