my advice-- get dreamweaver instead of frontpge--- i much nicer program that writes mch better, cleaner code (basically means things will look the same on different people's machines). If you don't mind pirating, you can download it from kazaa (you need a cable modem or DSL for this). Or Pm me, and we will talk :P

I agree w/ Heather... don't get FP... it adds a bunch of garbage to the code. My site, for example, was something like 4MB, but it kept growing, and growing (all the extra code)... once I moved to another program (Net Objects Fusion 5.0) it stopped "expanding"

FP is also not very Netscape-friendly, from what I understand.

Before you buy anything, I would recommend downloading some trial versions (most are good for 30 to 90 days) of several programs and finding out which one you like best.

Tip for FrontPage

I have no experience with Dreamweaver or other HTML editors aside from notepad and FrontPage, so I am not dis-sing (sp?) them, but here's a tip for FP users:

Much of the bloated code and compatibility issues can be ameliorated (oh gosh, I'm losing my english, can't think of a word for this) :

- Tools- Web Settings - encoding: multilingual UTF-8
- Tools- page options - HTML source - [o] preserve existing HTML
- Tools- page options - Compatibility -
"only commands for:"
-> Both Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator
-> 4.0 browsers and later is generally okay (unless your audience is known to run much older software, then choose 3.0)
- Before starting, create styles for each type of text block and use those rather than individual formatting

FP attracts a very big beginner's market, most people just jump right in without investigating. It's surprising how many people don't even know these settings even exist or understand how they work.

No matter which HTML editor you use, you need to know what code each browser has in its vocabulary and how it may interpret it differently. A person could just as easily hand-code a page that looks very different in each browser.

HTH!

Great info, Jo! I'm going to try to move this to the computer how-to forum so it will be more easily found, for those looking for this type of information...
