Really cool Paypal feature

I don't know why this isn't more widely advertised, but you can get a "virtual credit card number" for your Paypal account to use at on-line stores (anywhere that accepts Mastercard). They issue you a number and expiration date, which works like a debit Mastercard. When you buy from an on-line store, you use that number and exp. date, plus your normal Paypal shipping address. The charge is automatically deducted from your Paypal balance so you have to have enough in your account to cover the bill. This has been a huge help for my biz because now I can keep all my supply purchases off of our household credit card. Makes keeping the books a little easier.

It's a little roundabout to get the number. First, log in to your account, then click the little "Shops" link at the bottom of the page. Look in the column on the right and click "Shop anywhere." Then you actually have to choose a store (any random store in the drop down menu works fine), and a separate little window opens up with your account balance, address, your virtual MasterCard number and expiration date. Just copy that number and keep it handy for on-line shopping sprees. It stays the same until the expiration date. Why they would bury such a useful little feature is beyond me, but I think it's great.

Oh, and if the site asks for that little 3 digit number on the back of your credit card, I've found that if you just type "999" (or probably any other random number), the charge goes through just fine. (It's funny because before I tried this, I e-mailed Paypal to ask them about it and they told me that if a site required that number, the card wouldn't work. Well, before I got that reply, I tried a charge with "999" and it worked just fine. Shows what they know, lol).

Anyway, just thought you might find that useful

I use that all the time, it's awesome. The only time it doesn't work is when the site requires the security number from the back of the card. Not often needed, I know, but several embroidery sites that are outside the US require it.

Actually Jen, I've used it on two sites so far that required the security code. I just typed in 999 and it worked there too. You should give it a try...

I use my paypal debit card as a credit card...is that the same thing? It's very easy to get one...you just apply and they send it. You can use it online and ANYWHERE that takes CCs like the mall, department stores, etc.

It's not quite the same thing since you don't get a physical card. I was going to get the debit card, but I haven't upgraded to a business account and I'm trying to avoid it as long as possible.

I love that feature! Before I had a premiere acct and the debit card I would use their temp card number at OldNavy.com and such. Now that Im thinking of downgrading again this was a good reminder that I can do so and still order things online

Ugh! I can't do it because I don't have a real credit card linked to my account. Not like I have money to spend anyway, but I would like to know if I can...

do you have a debit card for your checking acct? The "credit card" I have listed with paypal is my debit that goes with my checking...the same checking acct I have listed with them. You'd think they'd figure that out and not accept it but I've had it that way for years.

That is exactly how I have my stuff linked. My checking acct and the debit card I use for their *credit card* info are all linked together. You'd think it wouldn't work. I have 1 CC and I do not ever give the number out as it is in a safe for emergency only so I act like I don't have one. So if you have a debit card Id link that and shop away

Yep, and even better...you can get an actual MASTERCARD where you can access your paypal funds using an ATM and use it like a debit card anywhere that accepts Mastercards. I got mine a month or so ago and it's so much nicer. When I have paypal funds I can access the cash instantly by ATM or use it as a debit at stores. You even get cash back bonus.
