Photographing children in Ethiopia

So... I am seriously considering going with our adoption director, Joy, to Ethiopia. The main reason for my trip is to see my own daughter to be... because we have yet another delay. BUT... Joy has told me that she really needs someone to take pictures while in Adama (Chaltu's city). It would be of children in the orphanages, pictures for families to see. Many of them will be the first pictures families ever see of their child.

So, if I go (95% sure I will), what should I have with me? I have a macro 50mm 2.8 that I do love. I have a 50mm 1.8 on my Christmas wish list, which I could possibly get before I go if it would be better. I also have my kit lens, and a 18-200mm.

I will also be getting pictures of the countryside, the markets, etc. When I go back to pick up Chaltu, I probably won't be taking my good camera due to space. But this time, I could.

What should I take? Should I purchase a camera bag, or just keep the camera around my neck (while in country) and in my big purse (in the plane)?

No help on the camera, but when my mil travels she has a padded sling type bag that she carries her camera in. I don't know if it is a camera bag or not but it works well and is easy to carry.

I use my 50mm 1.8 all the time for portraiture.

Do you think it would be worth it to purchase the 50mm 1.8? It's $150... I have a 50mm macro 2.8. Would there be enough of a difference? hm.

I think I will just carry it in my big purse, and take the 50mm and the zoom lens I have, 18-200. But, I need to get my zoom lens cleaned. it's the one with a fuzz under the front piece of glass. I like both of those lenses, and the zoom also has a nice wide angel - so would be good for sweeping country/city scapes. Plus, I have filters for that lens.

I think the 50mm 2.8 would be sufficient. Do you have a flash? I'm thinking that lighting in some of the situations may not be ideal.

My worry of taking your camera in your purse would be not enough protection for it/lenses. If you want, I have a crumpler 6 million I'm not using at the moment that I'd be happy to let you borrow for the trip. All your lenses and camera should fit in there nicely.

The issue is space in luggage/baggage.

The purse I am planning on taking is actually a Fleurville Lexi tote. And I would keep my lens that is not on the camera in a lens case.

I will be taking all of my stuff in my carryon, so my checked baggage will be donation items for the orphanages. So I will have my carry on suitcase, and then my purse. I wouldn't be allowed to have another carry on, unless I had a camera bag that could hold my purse items, too.

trying to think this through. I appreciate you helping my think this through!
