if you are shooting auto, this can happen easily bc the camera doesn't know you want a more broad depth of field.
if you learn manual you can control for that better...using a mid-range fstop will give you the more broad focus. for 5 kids i think i'd probably use f11 and see how it does...then narrow it or open it accordingly if i needed it.
in a situation like that, i'll often shoot multiples of the same "shot" at different aps so i can have a variety to choose from during post-processing...of course wiggly kids adds even more shots to the issue since it may take me several at one ap to get one that has all the kids doing what i need.
julie explained some about shutter speed (giving examples of how they correlate with the fstops) but i'll go into that in my next big post. give me a couple days...that way i can catch up here and y'all can have a couple days to digest this part.

next to the viewfinder - just to the right there is a little tiny dial built into mine it has a | - + type of symbol next to it. If you turn that, it brings the little AF squares into better focus. I can even use the camera without my glasses on now!

Okay, I read the whole manual. For some reason I can't select RAW as an option. I see where it SHOULD be, but RAW isn't there. Just large, medium, and small - high and normal quality - that's it.
Ah, well.
So, I know how to adjust them now - that will help a bit, I imagine

So, when I use a lower number in my f stop (ie. 1.8 which is as low as mine goes) it lets it a lot of light. If I set it all the way up at 22, it takes a very slow picture (lots of blur - holding the shutter open longer, maybe?)- so I need a faster shutter speed with that?

i just posted a series of threads for asking model specific questions...so we can help each other out with our specific models.
so...nikon mamas can help each other, canon mamas can help each other...things like how to change the aperture, what that little viewfinder dial means, how to find RAW in your menu...
hope that helps.
i'm seeing that sometimes the same questions are being raised by different people but the answers are getting buried in threads that are off topic...so the knowledge is lost for sharing. i'm thinking if we can post in those threads it may help...someone may have already asked your question.

i'll talk about shutter speed in another post
the "slow" photo is your shutter speed. the size of your aperture has *nothing* to do with how fast the shutter opens and closes...that is all shutter speed. you will need to adjust your SS for different aps and i'll explain that in the next big exposure thread, k?

Oh wow, I didn't know you could adjust the AF squares.. in the viewfinder. Cool.
i posted some and julie posted some...if you have some to share, by all means do so! we shared to help explain the concept (since we both do this professionally.)

play with it and take notes...see what happens.
Oh - weird - I swear it changed the first time, but I just tried it again and they shot at the same speed. Okay, nevermind then. I must've changed the shutter speed without realizing it.
And I am most certainly not a professional. So any constructive criticism is appreciated
And BTW I'm following another set of tutorials on another board, too... I need all the help with taking the shots that I can get

good example of depth of field!
notice on the first one that the focus seemed to fall to the left of the spool, maybe on that tin lid (or whatever it is?) in the second example the focus is more on the entire field...what you'd expect for f8
at 3.5 it will be hard to see a realy shallow depth of field but i think you got that part! just watch your focus...
also, that lighting situation will be hard to manage. there are some blown out spots on the wood table (meaning those are overexposed), yet a great deal of the image is still underexposed. if you can find a subject that is more evenly lit i think it will help you get proper exposure.
FYI, I was focusing on the dark pink chalk. I think that I'm starting to get the hang of it a little better, but I would still take any suggestions for improvement.
