I have it narrowed down to 2 cameras. The Sony A100 and the nikon D40. I know quite a few of you have the D40... I've been reading stuff about a lens issue with that model.
Opinions/advice?
I'll probably buy this week. DH wants me to be able to take awesome pictures while he is gone... so he is pretty motivated to get this for me. Whichever one I want. Then he can take our decent point and shoot to Iraq with him, and the kids can use his point and shoot.

I know you didn't mention it, but a few of us have and love our Canon digital Rebel xtis.
I preferred the Canon Rebel XT as far as holding it goes over the Nikon, I don't have either but in the future I DO want a digital SLR... I'm shopping for a pns right now though
I've held both.... and both feel fine. One wasn't a huge difference, kwim? And it's the D40x - so both are 10.2 MP.
I haven't looked at the Canon... sigh... too many to look at and hold.
Heather, don't be too jealous. DH has to leave for me to get something so nice. Last time he was away I got a new wedding set that is gorgeous... but I'm not sure the things are worth the risk, kwim?

I would put the canon rebel xti and the nikon d40 up against one another (versus the sony) - jmo

nikon has traditionally (for over 50 years) been the leader in glass (lenses)...for a reason. canon had it's strong points as well but nikon was the industry standard for a long time.
in the last 15 or so years the market has broadened...but still canon and nikon retain the majority of the market share. if you go to a major sporting event you'll be looking at a field of canons and nikons...for good reason.
kind of like breastpumps...why buy one from a company that does a lot of other stuff (evenflo)...ie sony...buy from the company that does what it does and only that...and does it well (ie either nikon or canon in this case.)
i learned on a pentax...i'm not even sure though in the world of dSLRs that i'd ever strongly consider a pentax nowadays.

Yep -what she said
I only went with Canon because I had a Canon P&S and was very happy with it. But, I know the Nikon girls love theirs, too.

i learned on pentax. used it for about 3 yeas. then i went to canon and honestly...felt like a traitor when i bought my nikon.
i had used canon film cameras for well over a decade when i bought my nikon dSLR.
so, i've got some experience with the major brands. at this point...the quality is good. you could probably go either way (canon/nikon) but i would never consider buying a dSLR that wasn't either canon or nikon. that's me and i realize my opinion is colored by the film camera industry/experience which may not actually apply to dSLRs.
I like my pentax LOL
But really I would go with the Nikon, esp. because you can ask all these women questions and they wont get lost like over in the bigger photo. fourms
