New camera

We're going ot be in the market for a new digital camera soon (depending on dh's bonus - timing and whether or not it's tax free). Right now I have a Konica Minolta DiMage Z2 - only 4 MP.

I'd like an SLR, and someting that will work especially well with taking pictures of the ocean, the sky, the green trees, and kids. I'd like to stay under $750, if possible, but that's not set in stone.

Also... to get the really good beach pictures where the water and sky come out vibrant, would I need extra lenses/filters?

in that price point you could get a nikon d40 with a kit lens and *maybe* a 50mm 1.8 lens too.

you would want at a minimum ps elements to do what you describe with the water/sky...as well as a circular polarizing filter for whichever lens.

i would also strongly (strongly) suggest UNDERSTANDING EXPOSURE by bryan peterson if you've never used an SLR before, so you can take it off of the auto modes and into manual mode as quickly as possible. the camera does a nice job on auto...but you can do so much more with an SLR once you take the "training wheels" off (ie auto modes)...

hth!

You could probably get a rebel XT (not XTI) and lens in that price trange too. For really bright sky, a polarizing filter is good.

Heather, there are several of us that have the Nikon D40 and love it... I'm sure if you search old threads you'll find posts about it. I think you should be able to find it close to that price range too (it wasn't back when I bought mine )

And not to hijack, but Tracey, or anyone, can you tell me more about a polarizing filter?

what do you want to know? i can post a separate thread if you'd like...so we don't hijack and so the info is easy to find for others

give me a bit...i'll be back on in about an hour and will post.

if you have a digital SLR you would want a circular polarizer, not just a polarizer...that's important.

more later. new post to come

actually...i may post it tomorrow bc then i can shoot some examples. you know they say a picture is worth a thousand words

we have our own photography bus (do weddings and such) and both have olympus evolts (the e-500 series) and 5 lenses. we also have a bunch of filters. i think you can get an e-500 for under 750 and get a two lense kit...

i'll go check

Olympus Evolt E-410 10 MP Digital SLR with 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 Zuiko Digital Lens thats an awesome camera''

Thanks, ladies, for the suggestions. I'm going to research and see if I can find them locally to hold, too.

DH and I both used to have nice 35 mm cameras with lenses and filters and such. It's been a LONG time, though, our good one broke on our honeymoon and we were never able to get it to work right again. Then the digital stuff came out, so we dove into the point and shoot stuff. But, I am ready to move into something better again. I want more control. I know, big surprise there.

Tracey, that would be great, thanks. Yes, it's a digital SLR (the Nikon D40 mentioned above). I have the kit lens, and and 55-200mm lens, and the hood that came w/ the 55-200, but that's it -- no filters. So I'm just not familiar with the benefits and uses of a filter. Thanks again!
