Do I want to spend the extra $ for a nikon d40x?

I am leaning towards the nikon because I am irked with my last p&s cannon (it is a POS IMO! I LOVED my PS cannons but this 4th one is crap and left me PO'ed so thought I would try something new. I am going to go into best buy and play around there with them. If I like the nikon I wanna see if they will price match and I am thinking of getting a warranty).

Anyway-
I'm just not sure I need it? How much better would picture quality be? or is this just an issue of how large I can print? I have no idea but I don't want to kick myself later for not spending the extra $150-$200 on a 10.2MP vs. the 6.1 y/k?

(again I am new to all this so type slooooow and in english with replies if you can )

so the x has much more mp? Is that the only difference?

One nice thing about more mp is that you can crop a pic without affecting the quality as much. Other than that, I don't need as many mp, because I don't make big prints.

I have a Canon Rebel xt, and I love it.
