Am I getting any better? (working in manual mode - eek!)

Here are a few I shot today...of my one and only cooperative child...Colin has decided he's had enough of the mamarazzi. LOL!

I've decided manual mode is not entirely pure evil and found that I can overcome my camera's somewhat lacking lighting abilities by shooting outdoors.

So...am I getting any better? After spending mucho time browsing other photographers' works, I realized just how many things I was doing wrong in my first CC post shots. Yowzers. I've still got sooooo much to learn!

I've been told these look a little "soft" - I guess I just prefer that look myself...but if it's unappealing to the masses, what should I do to fix that?

i love his eyes! you did a great job with the eyes. did you do any post processing work on the pix?

i'd agree they are a little soft...but that's a lens issue, often. not bad soft though...

perhaps a *little* overexposed. not much...play with your camera to figure that out. on my d50 i have to underexpose slightly to get the exposure i want...other cameras are different.

I PS'd a little bit for pping. I ran a color curve on all of them and took a boo-boo off of Cam's head (he bonked himself with a toy two days ago and it left a bit of a scratch) with the blemish editor. Oh, I almost forgot...I also did an Unsharp Mask on them with settings I got from a book.

Here are two more I worked on today. I know they probably have a ton of technical issues, but I'm really proud of them - especially the one of Cam alone. They were shot indoors w/out flash, which is a MAJOR issue for me and my current camera. I set the shot beside a window for natural lighting and then lightened them a tad more in PS (5.0, Elements)

I'm not a professional *yet*, but have taken some courses and working more towards it. I love the first pic in the first post! Looks like a magazine cover!
