Best lens for portraiture? Give me your opinion on this macro lens...

Dh wants to get me the Canon 50mm f/2.8 compact macro lens. He says it's good for portraiture too. It's about $150 after the rebates that he can get b/c of buying the Rebel XT.

I was thinking about getting either the 50mm f/1.8, which is $80 and has been said to be a bit plasticky, but is great for portraits, or the f/1.4, which would be about $190 after rebates...

Trying to decide which to get. I want portraiture and macro darnit! I love taking macro photos but don't want to sacrifice great portraits of the kids.

What would you advise? I can get either the 50 mm f/1.4 only, or the 50mm f/1.8 and the macro lens.

LOL...n/m. I read tons of reviews including some on fredmiranda.com (great site!) and decided on the 50mm f/1.4. Gulp! We got a really good discount on it because of the triple rebate offer Canon has going right now.

Very very excited! Can't wait to start snapping portraits of the kids.
