I'm thinking of trying cloth menstral pads. Has anyone here gone from tampons to cloth pads? It seems like a pretty big jump, but I've been thinking of trying them. If cloth diapers are ok, then why not cloth pads? from what I've read they are pretty easy to wash and work well as far as being absorbent. I've always had pretty light periods so I think they would be ok for me. If anyone has experience with these, please speak up. I want any info on how hard/easy they really are to clean, if they are convienient, and if they are absorbent or not. I hope no one thinks I'm wierd. LOL.
Thanks girls!
No one on here is going to think you are weird! Yes, I use cloth and also use the silicone reusable diva cup (google it as I'm not going into graphic detail for you). They are REALLY absorbant- think even postpartum absorbant and clean up extremely well. I've never had a problem. I'm sure there are some WAHMs on here who may even make them or LunaPads is a cool company. Best of luck and if you have more questions, feel free to PM me!

If you google fern and faerie, you can go to their website and look under 'for mom' to find a pattern for making your own washable cotton tampons (pattern comes with instructions for knit, crochet or no sew)
Sorry I can't post linkys!
I haven't used them, happy with my diva cup, but a friend of mine swears by them.

"Master, which is the greatest commandment in the law?
Jesus said until him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
This is the first and great commandment.
And, the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
On these two commandments have all the law and the prophets."
Do you sew? Here is a great site for how-to on making your own. I've been meaning to do it, but am lazy AskPauline.com - Free cloth menstrual pad pattern tutorial
I use a Diva cup, which I LOVE LOVE LOVE and (IMO) is a great alternative to tampons. I had to use tampons on a recent trip I took to Haiti after using a Diva for 2 years and I hated them!

If you're crafty, there's no reason not to DIY and try them out!
I've always been a tampon user, and I love my OBs. I tried the Diva, and could never get it to work. I gave it about 6 months, different folds and such--no go. I'm back to the OBs, and I'm OK with that.
If you don't DIY, maybe try a pack of commercial pads for a month before you purchase cloth pads? Just to try out the whole pad experience...
Thank you all for the great suggestions! Everyone here is so helpful. I'm going to make some from recycled clothes that we've worn out, since they are so easy to make. If they work out I'll probably buy material to make a bunch. I love the idea of cloth pantyliners even if I don't like the pads. Wish me luck.
I love cloth. But for my first 36 hours I use organic tampons. I have not used a keeper successfully.my uterus is so tilted...it totally leaked. I love cloth..but not for heavy times.
I notice that if I really pay attention I sit on the toilet when I have to pee...and pass the blood(yeah helpful tmi.). And my pads rarely get used It is amazing when I pay attention.
I love using cloth and organic. really wonderful stuff.

No one here would think you're weird - its cloth central around here! I think it was starting to cloth diaper (7+ years ago) which inspired me to make the switch, too. Been using cloth ever since - love it.

The easiest way to use cloth for yourself, imo, is to buy "preemie" diapers and just trifold them. When I started doing this I noticed a decrease in cramps, flow, and odor.
Good luck!

ITA I've been using cloth since ds1 was a baby and think they are so much more comfortable than disposable pads.

I love my diva cup! It's almost like that time of the month isn't happening..tho it took some getting used to. I had a few leaks before I figured out what was right for me. I still use cloth pads in the first day just in case when I go out...best of luck!!
