The apron obsession continues

Okay, smitten kitchen, which is the coolest blog about food- the author of it has pictures of herself wearing an apron, with coordinating potholders, from Kitsch"n"glam.

and LivingCraft magazine last fall's back issue- has a model in a beautiful green and blue apron. Living Craft is a 4x/year craft magazine aimed at Waldorfy- homeschooly families. The back issue has a knitted Little Red Riding Hood cloak which is the cutest thing, ever. The apron is from Simplicity. There is this amazing wool felted onto sheer silk shawl....the editor homeschools, I think.

I now have four apron patterns from Simplicity. And no aprons. I'm paralyzed. I can't find fabric. I can't picture me in an apron. But I also really don't like flour all over my shirt. I can't see wearing any of the quilting fabrics on offer at JoAnn's either.

Barnes and Noble is selling kid cooking kits, with aprons. I can see one for my son. not for me. but still....

He made kneaded bread yesterday. A half whole wheat, half regular wheat loaf.

The bread was used for french onion soup, from scratch. I made the mistake of putting in some sugar to caramelize the onions, and then some allspice. The kids and spouse loved it. I hated it, every bite of it. But the kids "So delicious and so oniony and warm! Can we have it again?" Which is really not the usual reaction to "oh, dinner."

If you like:

four giant onions, sweated in a covered iron pot for 30- 45 minutes, with half a stick of butter. Add some sugar, if you like. then add garlic, allspice and two bay leaves. add salt and pepper, and two cans broth. Bring to boil, then reduce to simmer for 15 minutes. Serve with break in the bowl, and cheese on top if desired.

I was trying to head off ds2's cold. It was rainy, too.

I think I would have loved it w/o the sugar, and with something other than allspice.

I will have to check out smitten kitchen. I love food blogs. Fancy toast was my favorite and she quit for a while now but her back stuff is hil.ar.ious.

Make an apron. Just do it. You will be a better housewife and the kids will obey you more. Go pick some fabric from the quilting wall that catches your eye.

Soups sounds fab, it is on my list with my pile of onions on my counter.

This is one of my favorite emails, that I have ever received.
I want to hang it in my kitchen, framed.
I wanted to share...............................

I don't think our kids know what an
apron is.

The
principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress
underneath, but along with that, it served as a potholder for
removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children's
tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty
ears.

From the
chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy
chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the
warming oven.

When
company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy
kids.

And when the
weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her
arms.

Those big
old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood
stove.

Chips and
kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that
apron.

From the
garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had
been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to
bring in apples that had fallen from the
trees.

When
unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much
furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of
seconds.

When
dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her
apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields
to dinner.

It will
be a long time before someone invents something that will
replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many
purposes.

Send
this to those who would know, and love the story about Grandma's
aprons.

REMEMBER.........

Grandma used to set her hot baked
apple pies on the window sill to cool.

Her granddaughters set theirs on the
kitchen counter to
thaw.

I have been so wanting an apron. A cool one. I have a couple of utilitarian chef's aprons. I want a stylish retro apron. And I need it because I am forever covering myself in whatever I am doing in the kitchen....

You should go ahead and make an apron. Just pick out the prettiest fabric you can find! and then, take a picture of you modeling it so we can admire it with you!
