Adding to the Bike Nation!

So in light of my recent post about cool Danish bike culture, I convinced my mom to buy a bike today!

She was going to get my old 10 speed "fixed up" but I convinced her that it's not really want she wants. She's 60 & riding on sidewalks to her office, the coffeehouse, grocery store. Maybe over to Omi's for lunch. Nothing more than a few miles. I mean, really why waste the gasoline driving those distances? I knew she wasn't going to be comfortable on a narrow tired, hunched over bike with a skinny seat.

She's getting a cruiser style woman's street bike. Wide tires, comfy seat, no speeds, coaster brakes. It doesn't have a basket, but she's looking to add one for her "shopping". I found her a cup holder so when she stops at the Starbucks she can take her heavy breve home with her. I'm giving it to her as a little gift.

I'm so proud & excited for her! This will be great for her health & mood. Plus one less person driving is always a good thing!

1 down, how many more to go?

my mom would probably love riding on a bike to and from the store and such but the roads are not safe to ride on around her house. I'd be more afraid of her getting hit. Very cool to see her riding I'm sure!

I've heard from more and more people that they're going to try biking. I used to bike around San Francisco when I lived there, but since moving to suburbia there are fewer opportunities. I'm moving to the Seattle area at teh end of the month and I'm thinking I'll start up again. I'd want to get a good bike though...mine was stolen.
My SO and I are finding a place next week and one of our deal breakers is if our works, groceries, and libraries are more than 6 miles away so we use less gas and are able to walk/bike.

if we didn't live out here in the sticks, i'd be all about biking everywhere. unfortunately, we live right on a busy road and it's 20 minutes to everywhere in a car. that stinks. i'm thinking when i'm older and don't have to tote kids around with me, then i might get one anyway.

I'll take pictures when I'm there tomorrow. She's been riding to work & says there is only one spot on the route where she walks the bike rather than rides because of the cars. She got a basket on the front & I bought her the best, sturdiest rear pannier baskets from my local bike shop so she can do more grocery shopping & feel comfortable with the weight further back.

Can you tell I'm super proud of her!

Oh yes!! I love bike riders! They are the coolest! I used to ride my bike to 2 different jobs, when I lived in the mountains! One was only about 5 miles BUT, with a baby on the back and sometimes a huge bag of laundry that I did at the babysitting job I had. The other, was a 12-mile, one way, jaunt at a restaurant. I loved those days!!! So free!

congrats to your mom!
