What 5 things would you have done before....
You decided to rough it? Like going on a show like Pioneer house?
I am thinking I would get my teeth all fixed and cleaned. I would get lazer surgery on my eyes so I don't have to wear lenses, I would get permanent eye liner, (sounds so petty next to the other two, but considering that is the only makeup I wear consistantly, it is something I would do), take a wild food course, and a soil amendment course.
What about you? What 5 things would you have done or do before you decided to rough it that would improve your quality of life?

I only wear eye liner. But my eyes are so big that it makes a huge difference. I don't even put on lip gloss... yes, lazy, but also cheap and major skin sensitivities.

Really? I'd think with your big, gorgeous eyes, you wouldn't need liner at all!
1. Take a LONG HOT BATH.
2. Learn about pioneer farming methods through a course or books.
3. Buy a field guide to plants and animals of the region and learn as much as I can about identifying them, which are safe to eat, etc.
4. Learn how to make cheese.
5. Study a bit about farm animals, care, husbandry, etc.
I'd wear my glasses, and I don't care about hair or makeup, so I'd be easy on those fronts.

We had the opertunity to apply for Colonial House. I decided against it because a) Annabelle was still in diapers and I am not hand washing cloth diapers and b) I had just got my diagnosis of Epilepsy.
If I were to do it today I'd get a really good and simple haircut. I'd do something to help me with pain management because pain is a constant for me. I'd read up on the time period and location with Annabelle. That's really it. It's not that I think I know a lot about everything. They have teams that help people through the transition, though.

Mama to Annabelle who is making me feel ancient now that she's EIGHT!
1. I would get my stomach problems fixed for good.
2. I agree with the teeth thing. Get all cavities fixed, get a good cleaning, for me and the girls.
3. learn how to catch, clean and gut fish (cause I will prob want to eat some form of animal out there, and I'm not too keen on the though of fried squirrel).
4. take a thorough course in identifying plants and trees and study up on what is useful and what is poisonous.
5. bring like 3 gallons of dr.bronners lavender soap.

I'd
1. get my teeth cleaned and examined (don't want a tooth ache while living off the land!)
2. practise baking bread
3. lift weights more so I have more upper body strength
4. learn to play some more songs on an acoustic guitar or violin
5. discuss the life style with my mom (she grew up on a rural farm in the 1920s and lived that life pretty much....no electricity, plumbing, markets, etc) and ask for helpful hints

I am not sure for me. we are actually considering roughing it. The system is too unstable right now, we struggle and we already live very inexpensively.
Living off the land seems more "right" to me, but who knows.
Dh woudl need his teeth fixed for sure.
Other than that, I suppose education in all aspects of primitive living skills, gardening, plant identification, water systems and how to obtain it, earth home building, canning, preserving, and all those type of things.
