How bad is sulfur in dried fruit?

I have a son who will eat almost NO fruits and veggies. Okay, here is what he will eat: bilberry jelly, frozen blueberries, baby carrots, chives, orange juice. He tried a dried apricot the other day and he will eat them!!!!! But I ordinarily avoid sulfured dried fruits, and the ones he will eat are sulfured. I'm wondering which is the lesser of the two evils - the sulfur, or not eating apricots (given the horrendous lack of variety in what he will eat).

Anyone have more info on this?

BTW I love that I can come here and ask this, and know no one here is rolling their eyes at me.

Personally I can't eat anything with sulfur dioxide in it because it tightens my lungs almost as it touches my tongue. There are many dried fruits without sulfur, and some apricots are processed that they are almost like the sulfured, you just have to look.

sulfites in dried fruit is bad-hard on the body even if you are not allergic. That said-you can purchase organic in bulk-it isn't pretty colors, but so yummy and no sulfites. No eye rolling here

Oh-and the amount of sulfites put on dried fruit well exceeds the FDA's recommendation for the maximium allowable for children. NOt good.

There is a company called 'Just Toamatoes"(I think) you can Google them~they do dehydrated fruit. Yummy and crunchy

Thanks, I was afraid of that. I will look for the unsulfured kind and see if I can get him to eat those (eyes closed, maybe?) Thanks for the suggestion. We've tried the dehydrated ones and he won't eat those. Hopefully as he gets older he'll eat more of a variety.

Dried pineapple is a hit here. Papaya and mango too. What about raisins? They are so good organic.

We are a Just Tomatoes family. We love their stuff! I have a non fruit/veggie eater too (I'm talkin' applesauce, carrots, celery & that's about it. (I don't count onions & mushrooms). She loves the peas & we have a ton of them in the pantry thanks to my mil.

We do the unsulphered dried fruits here, too. DH is very allergic to sulfites. He just can't breathe if he eats/drinks anything with that stuff. I figure it is probably not good for the kids either.

We love the apricots. The look brown instead of pretty colored, but they taste yummy. Mangos are also a big hit around here. Oh, my kids like banana chips, too.
