I've found the perfect piece of land and we have a bid in on it. It's amazing. There are a handful of mini-creeks (one just three inches wide) feeding a small creek along the property's edge that feeds the large creek in town. There are dawn redwoods and wild blackberries sprawling out forever.
I'm trying to come up with a name for the property, something in the vein of "Rocky Ridge Farm" or "Windsor Estates" which this property is neither. I've been living at "Wit's End" for the past four years. Because of all the blackberries I've been itching to call the place "Thornbush _____" I just can't think of a good factual name. It's on forestry land, it's not a farm, it's not an estate or a vineyard. Though I'm eager to make blackberry mead there. I'm open to any and all suggestions.
I'm also willing to make a shameless plea for good thoughts. I'll take any prayers, wishes and magic people are willing to throw my way. I want it, I want it, I want it. A girl's entitled to be greedy from time to time. I like living in the land of joshua trees, but I'm ready to see water again now. I'm so ready to go home.
Thanks,
Crystal

What other words would you use to describe the land, the feeling you have when you're there. What other natural features are there that you love? Is it flat or hilly?
Congrats, though, on finding a great plot, and I hope you do get it.
We have a great plot of land that we have been wanting to name as well. there are a ton of chickadees there, so we were thinking Chickadee Hollow or something like that.

My mother's family's place is Hardscrabble. My Great-grandfather named it that when he took it over from his father because it was so hard making it work. Hopefully that will not be anything like the name you pick! Howabout the local Indian word for place of many creeks? I think Poughkeepsie means something like this in the Wappenger language(?).
I don't even know what words to look up in native tongues. I'm sure I've got some translations available in all Grandma's old Campfire Girl stuff, I just don't even know what to look up yet. I like Hardscrabble, but no that ain't this place.

It's fairly flat. Leaning softly back to a rugged slope into the creek. There are three small ponds fed by mini-creeks. The house itself is a strange patchwork, split-level started in the 1930's probably added to as recently as the 80's with rooms added in between. We will probably put a mining claim on the property as well. The property line goes to the creek and the other side is National Forest, lush and dense.
Oh any advice from mamas with unfenced creeks on their property would be appreciated. I feel right enough about this home but I still stop every now and then thinking I'm a fool to move my young children to a property with fast moving water. And that crazy patchwork house has at least eight exterior doors. I'm definitely going to try homebrewing some fruity wines, there's grapes and peaches and plums growing on the property and wild blackberries surround us. Oh, and the baking. The house has two small kitchens, and rooms added over the previous exterior so there are windows in between rooms. I love it. If forestry will let us we'll be building a forge in the back by one of the small creeks. Blacksmith's need water.
The only real feeling I can describe when I'm there is "home". It's the first time I've ever been anywhere and seen myself growing old. In a good way. I just know I could live there forever. It's all alive and growing. From carefully cultivated roses to optimistically random patches of golden poppies, fruit trees, hollyhocks, pond lilies. I'm going to take out the oleander and locoweed. It feels like an ancient vitality, like possibility and timelessness. There is a pile of river rock next to the wood pile that just begs "build something with me". I want to have all of my strangely skilled friends build things for this property. Not because I need the things but because I want to walk around and see my friends even the only slightly skilled ones. Oh, please please please let us get this house.
Though of course if we do I have so much other stuff to ask about on here. There's no gas on the property and I don't like electric stoves, so I'll probably look into wood burning stoves or modern alternatives, and I want to put a composting toilet on the back house and...
Peaceful Creek
Blackberry Hollow
Little Thorn Creek
As for the land with kiddos, personally what we are going to do, is fence in a small area around the house where I feel comfortable letting the kiddos out to play. We don't have a creek but we do have a major FM road next to our house. You don't have to fence a huge area and it doesn't have to be a huge privacy fence, just something that would put boundries for the kiddos. You could take it out when they get older.
It's official we've lost this dream. We were so entirely outbid. Back when we bought this high desert homestead at Wit's End there was a bargaining process. The sellers asked for one price, the buyers offered something lower and it haggled back and forth to compromise. The house on the creek went for $20,000 over asking price. Insanely beyond our means. Oh well. Thank you all for the community and support though. I had a great time dreaming.
