getting rid of aluminum foil?

I use foil for cooking alot! I line my cookie sheets with it so things don't stick, I cover pans in the oven etc... has anyone gotten rid of foil?

No... I haven't. I use parchment paper nearly as often, and I do still use some zip locks... but there are things that I do with the foil that I can't really get the same effect any other way. I have started to collect glass baking dishes with lids. That helps... I can bake an entire chicken without it now... but for roasts, or bakes veggies I use my flat 13X15 baking dish, and there is no lid I can even get for that one... so foil it is. (And it is the most used baking pan in my cuboard because I make potato cassarole and stuff like that so much.) We don't eat meat a lot, but when we do, I always cover with foil to store. (not sure if that is really bad or not honestly... I just moved to that a few years ago when I started getting rid of plastic).

I would be interested to hear what the other mamas say about this one. I only bad I can see to foil is the Alu/Alsheimers disease corolation... but I honestly think that is just over use of it. Not sure though...

Everwhere I have lived, they have taken foil as recycling.

I've totally switched to parchment---it's awesome for non-sticking.

I use my Silpat mat for everything! Baking in the oven...it works wonders and washes so easy. They run about $20. Nothing sticks to it.

that silpat mat sounds nice and they have them on ebay for a pretty good price.
But what do you use to cover pans when you're baking something etc.? like I make potroast in the oven and have to cover it with foil.

Linda, what are you're thoughts on silicone?

I am not Linda, but I am worried about it because it is plastic. Most plastics have toxic offgassing. And when they are heated it is more likely to go into foods... espically foods that are high in fat. I just don't like to take the chance.

I don't use it. For non stick, I use stoneware or enameled cast iron. For covering when cooking, I use my dutch oven with a lid when it is something that needs to be covered in the oven.

I've been avoiding silicone too. My understanding is that it has the same risks as teflon. That at high temperatures(like exceeding 500 F) that it off gasses/gives off fumes. Supposedly until then it is inert.

I try to avoid anything that I am not sure about. I just started gluten free baking, though and I am having a tough time. Gluten free baking sticks like a mutha! I have been most reluctantly making muffins in my teflon muffin tin. I have a ceramic one...but they have been sticking to both kinds, even when brushed with oil.

For big things like a roast or chicken(I am not vegetarian at the moment)...I have a (borrowed) domed stainless roasting pan with a lid-or you can do them in the crock pot.

A really good way to grease for baking is the Spectrum organic shortening made with palm oil. You wipe it on-can use your fingers. I have no problems with baked goods then. But, I can't get it here.

Parchment paper-if it is UNBLEACHED is ok. But of course, creates tons of garbage.

I use my stoneware for just about everything. If I have something that needs covering I use the stoneware baker bowl that you can bake deep dish items or turn it over and use it as a cover. Stoneware is awesome!

ITA about the stoneware and have the pampered chef baking bowl (like mentioned right above this post) and I use it for a lid over the 9 x 13 inch stoneware pan.

I need more stoneware.....one of my pizza rounds broke.

I only use foil when I am baking with a dish w/out any kind of lid that would fit....mostly when I use my glass dish that is kind of like a 9 x 13 inch dish but is quite a bit bigger and does not have a lid. (with our family size, I need that large pan for vegie lasagne and other casserole type dishes)
