Need to buy a water softener, looking for info on greener alternatives

I really don't want to get a salt water softener, but don't know much about the alternatives. I have done some research, but only on the sights that are selling them, so of course they are highly recommended. What I need are some testimonials. I searched a couple places, like motherearthnews.com archives, but they didn't have anything (I did find some fair trade/organic coffee there, even a free sample- FYI).
thanks,
Robin

dh and I were thinking about whole house filtration systems. Haven't done much research but you might try googling that instead of softener.
