What can I do to prepare my 1 yr old for surgery?

I know I've seen info about this here at Amitys. My ds is 14 months and I have 2 weeks until his surgery for an undescended testicle. I've read about vitamin C, E, A and Zinc supplementation for surgery, but nothing about doses for infants. Should I just supplement myself and assume he will get it through my milk? He doesn't eat a ton of solids yet. It is pretty hit or miss with food for him, so I doubt I can really make him eat much of anything that is high in a particular vitamin.

Or, should I just stick with a good infant multivitamin? And, I know I've heard that some vitamins and foods are bad to take before surgery. Anybody know what those are? I usually keep flax oil around here, but I'm thinking about doing fish oil myself for awhile. That is okay, right? And, I just got some coconut oil that is supposed to be useful as a supplement with its high lauric acid content. Is this counterindicated for surgery?

And, I remember reading something about essential oils during surgery. Is that honestly something I can ask my doctor to accept?

I would sooooooo appreciate any help with this subject. I've done a google search and haven't come up with anything regarding small children.

Thanks,
Cary

I just had surgery on August 24th and I was told absolutely no vitamin E. Call the anesthesiologist and ask. They will tell you what not to take.

Please don't dose him with anything. Plan to nurse a lot.

The hospital will take some blood beforehand, and after. If you have vitamins- they mess up the lab tests, so he might get false positives. His liver isn't the same as an adult, and can't clear things. He may end up getting extra sticks- for instance, so they can get clear lab results. Also, vitamins are bio- active- and the drugs he takes are bio- active- they might work against each other, or combine and do something really strange. It's just not really safe, at all. Some vitamins can even mess up drug absorption rates, even painkiller rates of absorption, or senistize himt o minor thigns liek sunlight. Please, please, don't.

When you get home, and he isn't on hospital prescribed drugs, feel free then. Also, hospitals will use things with names similar to over the counter miedicine- but it will have a different formula, concentration, or delivery method. You really haven't dealt with the same drugs, even if you think you have.

back in 1992 when my oldest was 16mo he had to have surgery for a cyst. It was much harder on me then on him. Take rescue remedy for yourself so you can be strong and feel positive about the surgery and visualize it going smoothly and him healing quickly.

peace,
luna

I realize this is too late

but breastfeeding is the best thing you can do! My son had surgery at 8 1/2 mos. If he was formula fed I would have to dilute his formula and work back up to a normal feeding but since I was breastfeeding him the doctor said there were no special instructions since breastmilk is perfect!

My son is having surgery again in Dec (he'll be 18mos) and since I'm still breastfeeding him I know he will have the best nutrition.
