Question Slinging a 1 yr. old??

Good-morning!

I have a question and am hoping someone can help me!
My son turning 1 yr. this week and weighs around 24lb. I love my sling, I got alot of great advice last year when I was investigating them!
I made my own with the pattern from Mayawrap. I used a very lightweight poly/cotton fabric. I can still carry him in it quite well, for just taking walks or shopping. But, I'm nervous when it comes too using it while I'm working around the houe and such. I feel like he is going too slip out of the bottom, and I'm terrified too try it on my back. Should I maybe make a new one out of a sturdier fabric? Any suggestions on the best way too use a sling with an older baby? This is my first one too sling, unfortunately I didn't know about them with my other 2 kids.
TIA for any help!

I have a Pea in a Pod that is an adjustable pouch made from sturdy hemp fleece. I wore it around the mall with my 9 month old yesterday and I was just thinking about how very secure he felt in it, so it could be your fabric. Of course, a lightweight fabric will be nice for the summer. But, I like that I don't have to worry about fabric slipping with a pouch. I just get it in place and that puppy doesn't budge! Also, the pouch covers such a large part of my shoulder that it is very comfortable for long periods of time with a larger baby. I was always a bit uncomfortable with my ring sling. Plus, this particular pouch has really deep pockets, so I can pull it as snug and high around ds as I feel I need to.

Personally I like a ring sling when starting to carry on my back. I find that with a ring sling it's nice to be able to snug the younger kids up, esp when they are young enough to want to look around and not understand that they could fall.

I have a few picutres of my DD in the sling on my back (sleeping of course)

we currently use a new native pouch. it works becuase dd fills it up so she is still snug without needing to adjust the tightness. she also knows that she can't lean way to one side or try and turn around when she's on my back. she does like to test her limits sometimes though!

OUr secret for getting in it is for DD to put the sling on first, just like she was going to carry someone. Then I sit on the floor in front of her and put my one arm through. she hold onto my neck while I stand up and get everything adjusted.

I tried several times to do the "put them in the front and swing them around back" way and just couldn't get it. No matter how far back I started my rings, they would end up in the center of my chest (very uncomfortable). with the pouch I can make sure that the smile part is under her butt before I put it on. works like a charm.

OPh I should say that I sling both DD (3yrs 40lbs) & my neice (2yrs, 24lbs) and have never dropped them.

Chloe...how are your DD legs? Are they wrapped around like a piggy back ride?

yup, DD's legs go on either side of my hips. I usually end up resting my right hand on her foot.

maybe you need a smaller sling?

i have two slings, a medium that has about six extra inches and then a medium without the extra length. the one without the extra length feels more secure to me when i have someone on my back. the other thing is to bring the sling up really high on your baby's back so there isn't too much wiggle room.
