Ack! Can we eat the peanut butter if it has been left out overnight?

When I made lunches yesterday, I put the peanut butter in the pantry with the honey. It was there when I went to make the snadwiches today...is it too bad to eat?

It's probably ok. I think the issue with natural peanut butter is of separation of the oil, not of spoilage (you store plain peanuts at room temp in the cupboard). You should be able to stir it up and use it just fine. HTH!

I always store my natural peanut butter at room temp because i like the consistancy better. you just need to stir it up more often.
so eat away

it is fine, but I THINK the issue with natural peanut butter is that because the peanut oil hasnt been heated to a high temperature, that the oil is more likely to go rancid?? So basically as long as it doesnt taste or sm,ell odd it should be fine-- rancid pb has a definite odor (That I have actually smelled recently weirdly enough, lol)

Is it the same with almond butter? I left ours out for the weekend and I put it back in the fridge, but I'm afraid to use it. It smells fine though and doesn't look weird.

Ooh, I wish I had known this. We LOST our peanut butter a few weeks ago, seriously, I couldn't find it anywhere and I had just used it the previous day!

My best guess is that Ian got it out of the fridge and set it on the table and then somehow it got knocked off. I found it the next day under the buffet! I threw it away and had to go buy more!

I have never put my nut butters in the fridge... becuase I buy natural they are SO much harder to stir and spread from the fridge I literally have not done it for since being in my own house. So I know it will be fine. My kids love peanut butter, and if you go through it in less than a month you can keep it in the panrty the entire time (we go through about 2 quarts in that time). One thing though... ALWAYS use a clean knife when getting peanut butter... if you use a knife with jelly on it or something of the sort, it will mold inside the peanut butter causing more allergins to unvail themselves and the oil to go rancid. Beware... and use two knives instead of one when making PB&J's...

There are many things that Americans put in the fridge that people from other countries look at us funny for... eggs... peanut butter... herbs... none are put in the fridge in France (acording to my cullinary teacher friend). Just a thought... Americans are taught to beware of food, and not usually taught the ways to tell if food is bad. Even meats you can tell by the smell or texture when they are bad... regardless of how old they are (well, within reason).

My Dh about freaked out when I bought a tray of eggs in Mexico that were sitting out, lol! That is just the way they sell them there.

I can usually tell when meat is bad by feeling it...especially fish...which also shouldn't have much of an odor if it is good.

I went ahead and used the PB...I remembered the time that I brought home groceries and put the PB in the cabinet...the PB that you grind at Wild Oats, not in a jar. I found it there about 4 days later. We ate it anyway. Your body can fight off a small amount of bacteria and be no worse for the wear.

We eat Maranatha organic creamy peanut butter. To me it's softer and runnier than the skippy/jif stuff. If I don't refridgerate it, it turns liquidy. I remember the fresh ground stuff my mom used to feed us when I was a kid was really hard and hard to spread when cold. Maybe the Maranatha has more oil added or something. ???
