X-post: Crunchy sewing project - fabric produce bags for shopping!
I have a large canvas bag in my car that is full of mesh grocery bags and a few smaller cloth produce bags. I take them everywhere. It has been a goal of mine to not take any plastic bags when I am out shopping. I wish I had more of the produce bags! I only have 4 and I often have to put many different kinds of items in one bag. The poor cashiers have to empty the bags to weigh the different items each time I shop. Well, I was eyeing my fabric stash a few weeks ago, and spotted this white cotton mesh fabric. I bought it years ago to make a water sling for dd so we could shower together. Well, Hadyn is a bit past the sling stage LOL. And, it hit me!!! PRODUCE BAGS!!!!
I cut and stitched the bags together (boy is that mesh stuff a pain to sew!). I then made my own bias tape for the top and attached white cotton casings. Finally, I ran the drawstring through. Done. But, they were boring! So, I dyed them! Earth colors of course (IRL, the green is not so lime-ish. It's a nice kelly green).
Here is all 10 of them:
Here is a close up of one. You obviously can't use them to buy grapes! LOL But they would work well for most produce:
I had a lot of fun making them. They are for a Mama Swap on the sewing board. I hope the Mamas like them!!! (pssst, don't tell them, but I'm keeping 2 of them for myself!!!).

Thanks everyone! The bags are pretty light, though I usually ask the clerk to take the stuff out anyway, as I often have 3-5 different items in each bag. The fabric is a cotton mesh that I stumbled upon at Jo Ann Fabrics about 4 years ago. I haven't seen it since. And, I used my entire stash of it for these bags. But, I'm sure if I looked hard enough, I could find some other mesh type material. But, prob not cotton. I made this batch for a swap, so none are for sale. If I ever get inspired to make more, I'll let you all know! They were fun!!!! Esp the dyeing part.
For the produce bags at hygieic fabric filters. They are 6 bags for $10.00. They also have salad bags 6 for $6.00. Shipping is flat $5.00 to me.
I know the more you order of 1 item the price drops.
If anyone wants in on this I'd be willing to place the order and ship mail them out to everyone. There would NOT be a co-op fee or a packing fee, I have bunches of poly mailers.
Hey Mamas! I know there were several of you looking for produce bags. I have some made up and I am adding new colors in a day or so. Check out my pics!
I only have 13 available in this color, but I have several other colors that I am working on. First come, first serve. I'll go in order like this......1st - PM, 2nd - email, 3rd - reply to this post.
