Okay, my husband and I are haveing a huge debate over Islam....he believes that it is a very bloody religion w/ the edict to convert or kill everyone. I find this hard to believe, but I really do not know. He even told me that Muslims in the US who contradict this have not thoroughly studied the Koran. Help!

nak--I've always thought of it as a peaceful religion and the rare few who do get violent are like "Christians" who shoot abortion doctors. KWIM--they are not really Islam/not really Christian? Don't have anything to back that up, sorry. But that is all that I have heard about Islam is that it is peaceful if you are following the Koran. I'd love to learn more..I'll check out the link posted above.
I have been in this same argument with my step dad! He goes so far as to say all Muslims. Now that scares me, to judge a whole religion based on a very small sect of it.
My nieghbors are muslim and we've talked about this kind of thing since Sept 11th--what we cmae up with is that you can twist the bible, koran, whatever...to fit whatever twisted purpose you have--it's sad that something that is suppose to get you closer to God can be used to justify hurting others. My neighbors aren't strict practicing Muslims, but the grandpa has done lts of studying of religions around the world as well as Islam (his religion) so we have had quite a few philosphical discussions about religions and beliefs. I guess as far as Islam being a very bloody religion, I guess the same could be said about Christianity--the crusades for instance (I'm sure there are more examples out there and even in the Bible). I am Christian so please no bashing me for saying that. I wish there could be peace in the world and people to stop hurting and killing each other in the name of religion--I'm sure that's not what God intended us to do.

I did some research on my own and came up with some very interesting information. In it's true form, Islam is a peaceful religion.....yes there are some violent parts, but the same can be said about the Bible. I did share the information that I found with my husband, and it seems as if he is coming around.....apparently some very "conservative" Christians were feeding him garbage. I would love some links Angela I find other religions very interesting--I want to be able to answer my children's questions too when they come up--which they often do with having good friends that are Muslim as well as other Christian Churches, etc.

I guess you could read some of this and it should give you some insite into the Islamic religion. I do believe that this is a translated Quaran in it's entirety but I am not sure of that.

Jihad (struggle) is probably the most misunderstood religious word in existence. It often mentioned on Western TV and radio during news about the Middle East, where it is implied to be a synonym of "holy war" - a call to fight against non-Muslims in the defense of Islam.
The vast majority of Muslims have an entirely different definition of Jihad. It is seen as a personal, internal struggle with one's self. The goal may be achievement in a profession, self-purification, the conquering of primitive instincts or the attainment of some other noble goal.
