The Moon Under Her Feet - a story about the Magdalenes.
I just posted this to another thread as it seemed relevant...but also wanted to start a new thread as well.
The Moon Under Her Feet by Clysta Kinstler. She is a professor and teaches philosophy, religion, and women's studies. Although it is a work of fiction, it is based in the truth of her studies and includes an extensive bibliography. Truly, a fantastic and fascinating story about Mary Magdalene (and the previous Magdalenes, including Mother Mary) and how women influenced and were part of this pivotal moment in time when Christ was a man. It also weaves the Egyptian myth of Isis and Osiris, and the Sumerian story of Inanna and Dumuzi throughout.
I'm not a Christian, but the book was thoroughly enjoyable.
ah! i read this about 12 years ago, and still remember much of it fondly. for anyone interested in a very different perspective on the story of christ, it's definitely worth a look! i didn't know those things about the author, though, that's very interesting also.
I haven't read it, but the synopsis brings to mind "The Red Tent". Also an enjoyable book about women in biblical times (most of who are actually Goddess worshipers )

Yes and no. It IS as you describe about women in biblical times but it has a distinctly different "flavor". It's not about the secret rituals performed by women and things like that...more about the spiritual journey of a few, namely Mary Magdalene.
I am interested in more Mary Magdelene books. I read The Woman With the Alabaster Jar years ago and now there are so many I don't know which to read next.
I LOVE this book. I first read it a few years ago and I love her writing style and the subject matter. I liked the Woman and the Alabaster Jar after this.

Jo, you must read it. I think you will really like it.
Oooh, I loved this book too So cool to hear so many other mamas that enjoyed it!
Margaret George also wrote a book about her, Mary, Called Magdelene ... it's huge, but a great read. She also wrote a book on Cleopatra that I found totally enthralling. Oooh, I just looked her up on Amazon and see that she has a new one on Helen of Troy! Off to request it from the library *lol*

Oh, this sounds like a good one! I'll have to find that!
I have recently read Sarah and Zipporah, Wife of Moses. (Our last name is Moses and my husband got me that one for by birthday. He thought he was quite funny!) They are by the same author and are really great! I think that his next one is Leila, perhaps?
I love this kind of book!
