What is the difference between paganism and Wicca?

I'm just wondering, because they seem very similar to me. And then there was this article I posted on the current events board: Judge: Parents Can't Teach Pagan Believs

I'm not super-knowledgeable here, but my understanding is the paganism is an umbrella term and wicca is a more specific religious practice.

So, to borrow from SAT questions, I would say:

Episcopal is to Christian as Wicca is to Pagan

Smart mamas, am I right?

Yeah, that's usually how it is explained. The term "paganism" is a broad term used to describe any number of religions, many of which hold very little in common. Wicca is a very specific pagan rligion that doesn't necessarily hold common beliefs with other pagan religions.

yeah, you've pretty much got it. Christianity covers Catholicism and Protestantism, which covers Lutheran, Presbyterian, Episcopalian, Methodist, Baptist, etc....Paganism covers Wicca, Druid, Asatru; egads, i don't even know many of them. and i'm Wiccan, too...better get doing my homework, huh? and learn some more about my fellow Pagans? <g>
at any rate, what much of the Pagan religions have in common is, they focus on respect for Mama Nature, and/or are polytheistic, pantheistic, animistic.
anyway...thanks for asking!
