Smile any mamas here only wear skirts/dresses as a religious belief?

NAK....I am Christian, Baptist, and in our church I think all the women wear pants - al least outside of church. I know there is a passage in Deuteronmy about not wearing a mans clothing. Is this where the belief comes from? Is there more to it? As a Christian I thought we were not bound to the legalistic type requirements that were included in the original covenant. I have met 2 moms lately that only wear skirts and I don't know them well enough to bring up the subject. I kinda wonder if they look at me and think I am bad because I do wear pants. I don't want this to come between us if there could be a friendship there in the future. Now, if I caught Dh in a blouse then we'd have problems....

I would just ask them!

I don't think anyone would consider you "bad" for wearing pants at all. Most of the skirt wearing/modest clothing Christ followers I know feel "led" to wear skirts, or to cover their heads - but wouldn't judge someone else who doesn't feel led that way.

I wear skirts primarily. I do own two pair of jeans for winter and a few pair of boxer shorts for summer (mostly for in the pool or over a swimsuit) and a few pair of mama made for me capri/clam diggers but I prefer skirts. I always have tho. Not necessarily because I feel led to wear them biblically tho, mostly because I find them more comfortable, more flattering and they make me feel more feminine/womanly.

I have had several friends from church ask me if i wear skirts for biblical reasons.
Last week I actually had someone stop me because I was wearing a pair of the clam diggers and she was shocked to see me in pants! lol.
She said "oh my! I've never seen you in anything but a skirt so I assumed you were doing it for biblical reasons" and we had a conversation and it was fine!

I wasn't offended by the question or anything like that. I say you should ask.
If they are wearing skirts for biblical reasons, maybe they can share those reasons and beliefs with you. If they're not , you're no worse off for asking. And if they're truly following a Christ based path, they're not going to judge you for wearing pants

I went to school with a friend who wore skirts for religious reasons. And we were best friends. Let me tell you, she never thought I was bad for wearing pants (and FYI I was a tom-boy in school). I would definately just come out and ask them, most usually prefer that you ask then question yourself/stare.

Just my 2 cents

If anyone wants some modest women's dresses, PM me and I can send you pics......I had them custom made from the company Lilies of the Field.
I've been hanging onto them because I paid too much to put them in a yard sale, KWIM?

I've always been fascinated with the passages in the Bible about dress...

I only wear modest skirts and tops. My skirts are below my knees and my tops are not low cut and have at least 3/4 length sleeves. My clothes are also not too tight because that would defeat the purpose.

I know it's an old thread, but I want to reply anyways

In our house (and most of our church, lol) the girls only wear dresses/skirts. Yes, it has to do with the passage in Dueteronomy (my pregnant brain isn't working right now, so I can't go into huge depth about it, lol)

It also has to do with modesty. Pants/shorts show the outline of the female form/butt/etc. A not tight dress or skirt doesn't. We wear skirts that fall at the back of the knee or longer, and that aren't tight at the hips. Shirts don't show belly when hands are lifted, and we don't do sleeveless shirts. Cap sleeves are ok, as long as you can't see down the sleeve opening into the shirt.

All that said - there will be some people that will say that the pants/shorts they wear are made for woman. And that's true - they are. But dressing modestly/bibically is a conviction. You have to feel it's what God wants you to do, otherwise it won't make sense to you (or my family/IL's/etc!! lol)

Allison, please don't take offense, because none is meant, but I have a question for you. If you only wear skirts of a certain length (as do I) and your shirts must cover your stomach even when your arms are raised (same here), then how can you show a picture of your bare stomach online? doesn't that go against what you believe?

I am a high school teacher. I see lots of students who say they are Christian. I have no reason to doubt that. In fact, many are very active in their respective churches. But, some of them wear clothes that are very revealing. I have a hard time understanding this. (They also cheat in school, lie to their parents, are very mean to each other, etc...) I understand that these are young people, and they do not have the same understanding that I do. But, I think it is pretty basic that if you are getting attention that is sexual in nature, that you might be causing another to sin. (Personally, I have never been comfortable with that kind of attention from men, but that's a whole different thread.) Is there another way of looking at this that I do not see?

to refer to your original question, I do believe that there is more to the scripture in deuteronomy than meets they eye as do many many things in the bible. I think I might do some research on this. The whole "man's clothing" is a very dated issue if you really look at it. Back in biblical days no one wore pants so when they say men's clothing I'm sure it must certainly not be refering to pants but I'm thinking something more specific like a type of robe or sash etc. I do believe it is indecent for a woman to wear daisy dukes or mini mini skirts or bikinis etc. but I don't think it is unbiblical for women to wear pants. I think it is a scripture that was taken too literally.

I know a lot of people in my denomination (rebels like me. ) have studied it out and that verse was referring to women wearing men's armor and pretending to be men or something like that. PM me and I'll give you a link where they battle it out...lots of debate threads there with lots of info.

I'm not exactly sure what you are asking. I have to agree with what you said, but I don't think wearing a pair of jeans will make a man think sinful thoughts, but a pair of short shorts and a bikini midrift bearing shirt may.

Jeni,
I don't think its right for anyone to be dressed immodestly or lie, cheat, etc but it is happening all around us.

I think that some of that may be because theses youth are relying on what their parents believe and don't have the same degree of belief.

Or, maybe they do believe in their religion but are swayed by the styles of today and the things their peers are wearing/doing. It is not easy to do what is right and maybe these kids are having struggles with doing what it right without worrying about the consequences from their friends. Its not easy to be so different, but it is doable.

Teens are such a hard age if you don't really know who you are and what you want for your life.

Jeni, I don't think that I'm equipped to answer your question because I'm not Christian. However, that's why we dress so modestly; to take away any of that attention that we may otherwise have recieved. In fact, we, Orthodox Jews, educate our children separately: certainly in high school boys and girls don't even attend the same school - numerous elementary schools are also divided. My children attend a school that has separate classes, but boys and girls are in the same building, many of my friends' children attend separate boys and girls schools. The whole function of dressing modestly is to remove that pressure to 'live' up to society today and not act as a sexual being, but rather a human being. We (generic we, here as I have only boys)tell our children that they are 'daughters of the King' and thus need to act in the appropriate fashion.
