how far south or southeast, i mean just out of the metro area (which extends down to jonesboro) or south like macon?
the places jami listed are cool-looking but not very good places for raising children (of course thats my opinion) and are still in the metro atlanta area (little 5 and grant park are considered atlanta city proper as well as super high crime areas).
so if you could be a bit more specific about how far south you are needed to go then all us GA mamas could help ya out
Dh works out of Conley,he's a truck driver ,we need something within a 1/2 hr drive.I need a safe neghborhood since DH is gone most nights out from there.I would love someplace with siewalks so that we could walk and not use much gas.My price range is 600-750 mo.This is crazy I grew up off of confederate avenue till I was 7,then we moved to Augusta. There are few sidewalks here in the sub-burbs.Thanks brawnwyn and jami

wow 6-750 is pretty cheap, i have no idea where you would find housing for your entire family for that little an amount. conley is close to riverdale and jonesboro - not as crimefilled as atlanta but still not super safe but riverdale might be in the 6-750 area
i would avoid riverdale. my aunt & uncle lived there & said the crime was horrible. check out stockbridge or other places in henry county. stockbridge is only 10 miles from conley http://www.mapquest.com/directions/m...ge&2s=ga& 2z=
henry co. is growing like mad right now so i dont know if your amount for housing will be found there...but worth a look

stockbridge is just like riverdale in the crime area. maybe mcdonough - i have heard good things about mcdonough. if you could go to griffen/upson county (30 min from downtown atlanta) there are nice places in griffen (victorian houses etc) of course there is a bad part of town. and just about anywhere, safe, just outside of atlanta is going to be more than $600. maybe a real estate agent could help? i am sure my idea of safe is different from others, personally i wouldnt feel safe in riverdale but i suggested it bc of the money issue. now if you could come north, then i can tell ya lots of places lol
but even the podunk town my parents live in (and its and hour and a half from atlanta) charges at least $1000 a month for housing. basically anything within 2 hours from atlanta is either going to be full or crime or kind of expensive. one reason i cant wait to get the hell away from atlanta.
Kay thanks,We live in Augusta for just that reason, cheap rent.I loved when we were in NC.I found a Apt for 650 mo.nice area too.DH works his @$$ off for what we make now;for my family I'd go farther torward Macon if you might know;I just need to save as much as we can on fuel. The boonies is fine but I need somplace where the chance of home invasion is low.So what is in north Atlanta? My main reason for wantin south is GAS.Gotta cut costs somewhere.
I am a former Griffin mama !!! I loved it... it really is about 40-45 minutes through to the ATL. I would look at Griffin, Maybe at Mcdonough, JAckson(really like Jackson).
Good Luck mama<

Thank you to all of you mamas who responed! We have had a change.DH's job tranfered him here.YAY!!! There were no openings in Augusta when I started the thread but one opend up this last week.YAY! No far away moves. On top of that it's a job where he's home every day,no more $80 week to keep him running. His budget is half that now.Yay.And I don't have to buy him separate groceries every week either, just fix him a lunch and add a few drinks.Much better.Who ever prayed for me or sent good thoughts my way,Thanks. You know who you are and it will come back to you ten fold.

that's wonderful news! i just caught the end of this thread but housing in atlanta IS really high.
my first apartment out of college in 96 was a 2 bedroom and cost 800/m...my first apartment with my husband in 97 was also a 2bd and was over 900. i don't think we've been below 1000/mo since about a year into our marriage. it's just super pricy here...(i've lived nearly all over the northern end of the city)
