Okay, so we go on vacation the last week in July! Umm, not far off LOL We normally go to Gulf Shores, but after going back & forth rather we should go or not due to Ivan hitting last Sept... I think I've finally decided on NOT going. Many different reason, but now I need to find another place to go. I had told Michael last night we'd go to Ohio to Kings Island but I really want to go to a beach. A nice clean, family friendly beach! So, this is where you all come in. I had once thought about going to VA Beach, stopping at Doswell on the way to go to Kings Dominion. It's about 10hrs from here to Doswell and then about another 2hrs to the beach, am I correct about the Doswell to Beach time?
And then I thought about going to Myrtle Beach... BUT haven't researched enough on it to know what there is to do down there...
Anyone wanna help a desperate mama out??? I mean, we normally only travel about 8hrs. Michael said anything longer than that, I'm going to have to drive. Well, ya see, I can barely drive sanely on a 2lane road, I know I won't be able to drive at ALL w/o freakin out & having to change lanes on 4, 6 & 8 lane roads!!!! TIA for any & all advice......

Virginia Beach is a nice clean family beach. They've really done alot to clean the place up. There's lots to do too if you don't want to just go to the beach. Anywhere on the Outer Banks of North Carolina is beautiful too.

something you may want to take into account--- the other beaches are not going to be on the gulf, so the water will be rougher. The sand also isnt going to be as fine as the sugar beaches on the gulf.
Just wanted to warn you that most of the beaches up the coast dont look like the ones on the gulf so much-- I am not sure if you have been to other beaches or not. Anyway, when we traveled from AL to Canada we went up the coast for sections of it, and I was really surprised at how different the beaches are, and how much bigger the waves are!

Heather is right but I find that Gulf Shores is not as pretty as the beaches 30 miles east of there in Florida. The NC beaches, particularly Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, and Emerald Isle are nicer than Gulf Shores. But I would hit Pensacola or Navarre Beach before NC beaches.

Thanks everyone.... Unless I change my mind again LOL I think we are sticking with Ohio to Kings Island.... We normally budget $1000 to go on & we had to spend $200 of it w/in the past few mths on our a/c & trailor ins. bill. That would be gas & food $(we eat cheap, Burger King, Subway, & take some things to snack on). So, I think we'll do good on $800 going to Ohio & I'll just have to plan to go to one of the other beaches next year. Heck, I guess we could make a 'Beach Road Trip' traveling along the shoreline huh??? Hopefully next year, I can save up even more $ to go on and we can do that.

nak, yep navarre is my fav-- it or orange beach. NW florida is trying HARD to recover from the hurricane. there is still a lot not open, but because of that I bet you can get great hotel rates. DH's dad is in pensacola and we go down quite a lot. The beaches actually look pretty good. They have reopened a lot-- we went to the beach down there just a few weeks ago and it wasnt at all bad.
Or like Candy said, you can do PCB-- they werent hit badly at all
Fwiw, the distance is about the same to any of the above. We drive to Mobile all of the time as well-- my dads entire family lives there, and I have been to PCB dozens of times-- all depends on which road you take out of Montgomery as to where you will end up. Destin is super nice as well, but has gotten quite pricey and much more commercial since we used to go (once upon a time, lol)
