SNS #26-28: tank top, skirt, and jammies for 8 yo girl
My dd #2 is turning 8 on Monday. I finished these today and I have several more things cut out. Hoping to finish them up tomorrow or Sunday at the latest. No modeling shots since she won't get these until her birthday.
The first set is a tank top made with a pattern from Ottobre 2/05 (size 140) and a skirt from Kwik Sew 2819. I used this lovely rib knit (Baby Nay?) I got last year. Vanessa's nickname is butterfly and she loves pink, so this is perfect. I attached the self-fabric binding using an industrial binder from the ebay guy with my Janome 1000CP. The hems are lettuce edged.
And I also made her this nightshirt from the KS Sewing for Children book. This is the basic t-shirt, lengthened 14". Used the binder again to attach the neckline binding. Lettuce edged the sleeves and hem. Oh, I used one of the fonts on my sewing machine to write "Princess Vanessa". I should have just used my embroidery machine but I was feeling lazy. It doesn't look as good with just the writing from the regular sewing machine. It isn't very even and the fabric shifted around. Live and learn.

So cute, that outfit is adorable! I don't have all the feet for my serger, so I'm jealous that you can do a lettuce edge, LOL. It looks so pretty! The nightie looks nice and comfy, too, I bet she really loves it.

I'm sure she's going to love it all! The binding turned out great! I'm tempted to get one of the attatchments, but I like to bind in the round, and it won't work that way, will it?

Not really. I tried it, but it looked really sloppy where I finished it off. From then on, I only used the binder in the flat.

Daphne, I don't have a special foot for my serger to do lettuce edging. I have a Brother 1034D. All I do to lettuce edge, is remove the left needle (so it is set to three thead overlock), take the stitch finger off and reduce the stitch length and width to the "R" setting which is the narrowest. Then I adjust the tension a bit so that the lower looper is tighter and the upper looper is lower. This produces the rolled look. To get the wavy look, I stretch the fabric as it's going under the foot (the differential feed is turned off). It works really well with rib knit but it will work with interlock or jersey too. The first outfit in my SNS above is ribknit, but the nightgown in the second pic is poly interlock.
You can also get a fairly nice lettuce edge just using your sewing machine. You do a zig zag (with short stitch length) right over the edge of the fabric, stretching the fabric a lot as you sew.
