circle skirts--fabric type?

I want to make one of the circle skirts people have been SNSing a lot, with a band around the waist and then a circle bottom. I'm staring at my stash and I can't figure out what to make it out of. Will a woven work? Does it have to be a little heavier, like a twill or poplin? It seems like a quilter's cotton would be too light? Do knits work best?

One of my daughters got caught in a thunderstorm last week and is very scared of thunder now. She absolutely doesn't want to go to see the fireworks tonight, so the rest of the family has gone off and she and I are home--I'd like to quick make her a skirt, but now I'm stuck trying to figure out what to make it out of.

Thanks!

Margaret

Margaret~ I've been making mine out of knits and work perfectly. I'm not sure if the movement would be the same with a twill but still could be done. I used a simplicity pattern Lizzie McGuirre 5084 and put in an elastic waist instead of the zipper. They are on Sale at JA's right now for $1.99.

I was wondering if anyone has made one of these circle skirts with the 'drop' waist (i.e. Crystal/hannahsorchard's recent S&S) using the instructions that Monica posted that are in the FAQs? I know Jadyn would love some of these, but I forgot to get the pattern at the store today and am not sure when I'll be going back

I did it pretty much like that but not using those measurements. I did the hip measurement divided by 3.14 and then divided that number in half to get the radius. And that was the arc size.

Oh and I have made like 6 more since then. Hannah LOVES them and so Chloe had to have matching ones. I have a 20mos old fashion consious child, lovely. lol

But anyway, I also put shorts in all of Hannah's latest ones. Now she can play outside in her normal Hannah style lol

Thanks for all of the advice. I was planning to follow Monica's instructions, but I haven't done it yet. And I was thinking about putting shorts, in, too, so glad to hear that that works well.

Faith, that is how I make my hankercheif and circle skirt. Just make a band, then attach the circle.

And wovens work great. I've used linen, rayon, tencel, stretch poplin, and quilters.

I haven't read Monica's instructions, but the ones I'm making Annaliese lately have all been that drop waist style.

I've been using knits.
