Camp shirts/boy button shirts- How do you do it?

I get frustrated every time I make one of these for ds!
I hate doing the collars and am wondering if I'm the only one who has trouble making them. I just never can get the part of attaching the collar (how the they say to leave part of the top layer up and then to attatch the lapel linings to it). I always have to jerry-rig it to make it look ok.

So, does someone have a secret to making them (esp the collar part)?

Do you use a serger or mostly just the machine?

Thanks.

E.

The trick is in the measurements and seam allowances. Like hats, they have to be precise. I always use my sewing machine for this part too. It doesn't show because it's hidden under the collar and that way, if I have to take out seams and re-do it, it's much easier!

SA's were my key to getting it right.

I was doing my standard 1/4" SA and not the 5/8" they reccomended. I also wanna say the pattern I used had 2 different SA's for the making different parts of the colar. Even though I've made about a dozen I still have to do them step by step with the directions.... such a rare thing for me.

Unfortunately, the only tricks I know for getting those collars on is bad words & a seam ripper...sounds like you know those two already. But I certainly empathize! They're *evil*!!
