Sewing mamas!Calling all AmityMama's who like to sew! Do you make quilts, clothes, diapers, bags? Do you love to run your fingers through fiber? Can't get enough just sewing, but want to talk about it too? Come on in!
Well we are moving next month to Georgia and the movers where coming the 2oth of July now DH says today he uped it to the 13th of July which sucks for that is dd birthday! So I am very nervous they will loss it all or steal it, lol. Dh says no one wants my fabric stash and they would not know how valuable it is. So should I measure it all and take inventory? They don't mark the boxes right half the time and they could toss fabric in with book or socks and right socks on the box so I would never be able to prove there was fabric in there. I do watch them as they pack so I guess I am going to have to watch even closer now. Last time they did that and lost some of my stuff and I had no way of proving it for they lied and said the boxes where marked and labled twice with the same numbers so I lost some kicthen stuff.
So DH also said I could take my sewing machine and serger with me and some fabric but it all has to fit in a single tub container. I am starting to sew my good stuff but I know I won't be able to sew it all and kinda don't want to. Don't want the pressure of that anymore so I am taken my time. Can you tell I am very nervous yet so happy it is getting closer. Now if only Candy can more with me

Can you possibly send the good stuff to the address or to a mama here that is close by? I don't know how the military movers work and if they are the same as regular movers but when I was with an ex-bf, we had movers and they were a bunch of dumba$$es. I swear they had no common sense. It may be costly but maybe worth it so you don't ruin your fabric. If you wanted to you can have it shipped here and I can ship it back to you when you are moved in in Georgia. Even if you just shipped your good stuff, at least you'd know it was safe from the movers who don't care about stuff and it would only be the fabric you don't care as much for. I don't want to volunteer anyone but even if a mama around you(Candy ) shipped it to you after you got moved in that would save you the hassle too right. Good Luck with the move. Put your good stuff in totes, tape it up & tell them to take it as is. I doubt they would take it, but they might try to put more stuff in the totes...I've had that happen. I hate them messing with my sewing & crafty stuff!!!

Your dh is right. We're military and I've moved three times with my stash (most recently overseas to Germany) and I've never lost any of it (lost other non-sewing things though).
If you have your fabric in rubbermaid type totes, they will just tape them shut and ship them as-is. No messing with anything. That's what I did last time and everything arrived exactly as it was before.
So if you just have your fabric on shelves, you may want to invest in those big rubbermaid totes. It's an easy way to store the fabric anyway. I keep mine turned on their sides, with the lids off, with the fabric rolled in there instead of folded. Makes it easy to see everything.
You do sound nervous, and excited! I hope everything goes perfectly!

We just did a military move and i had them ship all my fabric. I made sure I put ALL of my fabric in ONE room, in one place in that room. I did the same thing with my homeschooling books, and also with my sewing notions. I didn't want those things wixed in with other 'things' that might not get packed right away. So... I had 10 large tall boxes of fabric. All of my fabric stayed together, because I even brought down the stuff that was stashed away upstairs and put it on the couch beside the shelves of fabric. I made sure that they knew it had to be together. I also did this with ALL of our towels... kitchen, bath, etc. I put them all in laundry baskets in one room all together, so that when they packed them, I would know what was in there.
My best advice... put everything you want packed together in ONE place. Move everything else away from that area. I had little 'areas' all over my house. lol I had one room that was just the kids beds and bedding. Another room had JUST their toys. Another bedroom had all of my home dec stuff, pictures, prints, mirrors, shelves, florals, etc. The movers did tell me that it made it easier for them, too.
The best part was it was easy for me to unpack. I knew if it was in the box from up in a kids bedroom it was probably the home dec stuff. The toys were all marked 'toys' and didn't have extra stuff in them because I had made sure they were in a separate room/area.

Another YMMV! Our last movers did NOT use our already packed totes. They unpacked EVERY tote we had packed and repacked it. Made a real pain trying to find all of the 'memorobilia' like from High school that dh and I had stored in totes to keep safe. sigh.... Anyway, they unpacked and repacked ALL of our totes. THEN... they didn't nest the totes, so it took up all that much room!!! So we ended up having to leave things behind. I was so mad... but I was also ready to be gone... so I just got rid of the stuff they couldn't fit in: lawnmower!, outdoor bench, large cooler. If I had my wits about me, I would have insisted that they at LEAST nest the totes and not just put the lids on and stack them in. We could have easily had enough room for my other things. (grrrrr - this last move was NOT a fun one... we also had a heck of a time with passing housing - didn't pass for a MONTH!)
I think I will do that. I know last time they did take everything out of my totes and then wrapped the totes, lol. Dumbutt's. I will do the little piles of things and I will go from room the room to make sure it is all package right also. So far my crystal as never been broken but they never took it out of the box either. Ok so I will use each room as a certain spot and put the special items in the living room to watch them more. We have 3 bedrooms so I am sure I can keep up hopefully. Thanks guys!
Thanks for the offer Kimboo! I will be moving to Hunter Army airfield in Savannah. Hope I get to meet more mama's from there. Who wants to help unpack, lol?
I would be more than happy to ship a box to you if you need it :0) But sounds like you got some great advice. I would move all of the girls stuff to Samie's room and then use Jessica's room as the fabric/notions room.
Come to think of it, they did unpack our non-fabric totes. But the MANY totes full of only fabric, they just taped them shut.

We had one move where they just taped the totes shut - actually, dh's stuff that was in totes was just taped shut for his move to Korea. I'm just sick of moving and want to stay somewhere, I think... well... that is until I have been there for a couple of years! lol

I have no experience with military movers, but when we moved to from Michigan to Delaware it was a corporate move. I didn't have nearly as much fabric back then as I do now (LOl - back then I had no idea there were such things as online forums ). I packed all my sewing stuff myself and taped the boxes shut. The movers (yes, they were pretty dumb-nutty) put my box inside another box and taped it shut. Go figure! These were the movers that wrapped up my soap and soap dish from the kitchen sink in a yard of packing paper. Anyway, good luck with your move!

I wanted to comment on the tote moving thing. I guess it depends on which moving company the military contracts in your area. (For our move they just sent private movers that they had a contract with.) We already had all our stuff in totes. They just opened them all up to see what was inside. Then put the full totes inside boxes. I guess they had some problems in the past with people claiming damage for tape residue left on totes. You can call the movers in advance and ask what their tote policy is.
