Ideas for a HS graduation gift?

My nephews graduation party is on Sunday.. what are some nice ideas for gifts? He is going to U of Delaware in the fall & will be staying in the dorms. I was told he has nothing for school yet. 17 almost 18 yo.. total new age hippie (made him a hemp embroidered Phish tee for his birthday last year & he thinks Im the coolest aunt ever! *lol*)

Hopefully that gives you some indication of him... last year for his sister who graduated & another nephew, I made them lounge pants & a drawstring laundry bag.. but I don't have any "cool" enough fabrics for lounge pants for him. *lol*

Any other ideas??
Thanks!
~C

i dunno! we just gave cash for my cousin who graduated!

an aunt made him an emergency sewing kit, though. pretty neat! we all doubt my cousin's ability to thread a needle, much less sew on a button!

Depending on how much you wanna spend on him, how about maybe a comforter set and those other sets that have like the garbage can and other things thrown inside it for a dorm. Or even a gc to somewhere so he can go pick stuff out? A set of towels for him for the shower?

Make him another Phish tee so he has a spare. You know how it is in college right, when you only do laundry like every month? Seriously, I'm thinking... I'll try to come up with something.

Oh no, we arent spending money, I am hoping to make him something.. there are too many people in my freaking family to keep buying them stuff. His birthday is this month too. Im sure he's going to be raking it in! 19 neices & nephews on my dh's side.. we are expected to give gifts to all of them. .. and I wonder why we are always broke.

Meagan.. I would.. but no more black hemp.. & no embroidery machine. I got the last one from phunkymama & not sure I could get another one by Saturday anyhow.

Some sort of messenger bag to carry a laptop or his books in? Or a large drawstring bag to stick his dirty laundry in to bring home?

A seedless watermellon would be cool!

(edit: to clarify, the above was posted by my dorky dh who was fooling around on the computer. how he ended up in the sewing forum is beyond me. ~wendy)

My sister is graduating from HS this year and I just picked up a T shirt for her and her best friend (since they were 7) that says "Ok, I graduated. Now can I go back to bed?" It is white print on black and is *THE* best grad thing I think I've ever seen.

I squandered all the cash on Slurppies and Gas by they time June was over.

My fav idea for grad gifts are laundry soap and quarters with a little "How To" book or notes on how to do laundry. But honestly that is more of a going away sort of gift than graduate.

If it wasn't a noncash thing. I'd say GC to Borders or some other bookstore.

You know, I'm stuck on this laundry thing, and it sounds like others are too!

So, how's about a laundry kit? ~ a couple of laundry bags (toggle), some quarters, a book, etc. I mean, that stuff will cost money, but not a lot.

What about a pair of side patchy pants or shorts? Not really college related, but it sounds like something he might appreciate.

We did a GC thing for a friend who just graduated, but I'm thinking of making her a "How to catch a husband" laundry bag for going away, since that is part of why she's going to the college she's chosen. Maybe I'll make it reversible, though.
