The hem stitch of a mass produced t-shirt, what is it?
Anyone know what type of machine/stitch that is that the mass produced t-shirts have at the bottom and sleeve hems?
It makes the double line on the top and looks serged on the other side in a sort.
Maybe it isnt all one stitch but looks to me like it is?!?! IS this something my 50 stitch Janome might have on it, but am just missing?!?! This would make hemming sleeves, bottoms SOOOO much easier... I am sure I am dreaming though!
That stitch is produced by a coverhemmer. Some sergers do have that capability, but it's a PITB to make the switch over on most. Many of us here have machines that are *just* coverhemmers. I have a Bernina and there's also a Brother that some have, and a new Janome that many people have gotten lately. Just search for "coverhem".

It's called a coverhem. Some sergers will do the stitch or else you need a separate coverstitch machine. I have a serger and a separate coverstitch machine. I think Bernina probably makes the cheapest one. That's what I have and it's around $500-600 new. Babylock and Brother (probably others too) are $800-1000 I think but you can use attachments on them. The Bernina has no attachments.

You can get a similar stitch using a double needle on your regular sewing machine. Do you have your sewing machine manual? Look in it for info on double needles on your machine.
Thanks ladies.. Here I thought it would be simple. I searched around and WOW the coverstitch/hem machines are NOT cheap, huh? I dont think I can add another machine to the biz right now, lol!
I suppose the serge then stitch over twice method will just have to work, huh?
