My dd just ruined her new dress

My 5 yo just cut several large holes in a dress I made her last night. She told me she hated it (she does say this at least half the time I make anything for her). I left the room for a few minutes to check e-mails and she comes in with the dress grinning and told me she couldn't wear it any more. She cut about a dozen holes in it with a pair of scissors. I'm just ready to cry. My 5 yo and 7 yo leave on Sunday to go to Florida and I've had this crazy idea that I was going to make all of their clothes for the trip. I didn't get anything made during the day because dh broke his only pair of glasses at work yesterday morning and he can't see anything without them so I spent a lot of the day driving him around getting new glasses so he could go back to work. I stayed up until 3 am working on the clothes (mainly the dress dd just destroyed). It was one of the few dresses I've made where I was really happy with how the gathers turned out too.

YIKES! I'm sorry she did that to the dress. 5 yo and scissors=not good even when they don't hate stuff. Can you let her pic some fabrics from your stash and see if she wants dresses from any? Sorry again that she ruined it.

I think I would have wanted to choke her out. Yikes. I can't imagine how awful you feel. I'm so sorry. Maybe if you focus on sewing for the other kids and don't make her anything for a while, she will come to appreciate your efforts a little more in the future. I'm so so sorry.

oh my goodness! I'm so sorry, I'm sure you must be feeling sick over it. I'd probably not make her anything new for a while, either. It's not nearly so heartrending when they ruin store bought clothes.

OMG!!! I can't imagine how you must be feeling!! It must be *SO* frustrating! I'd want to throttle my dd if she did something like that. I sure wouldn't make her anything for a good while! I'm so sorry she did that.

Oh that would just make me sick. I'm sorry.

I ditto Shecki's thoughts. My 5 yo went through a similar period where she disliked or at least had a criticism for everything I made her, so I went on a sewing strike where she was concerned. I sewed plenty for her brothers, but not a single stitch for her for about 2 months. When I did finally sew her something again, she was estactic and I haven't heard a complaint about my sewing for her since.

I'm so sorry. I agree that she shouldn't get any mama-made clothes for a while.

Thank you for the replies. Dh came home for lunch so I've had a break and a chance to cool down. I wasn't so much upset about the dress as I was the attitude. I don't think I'll make her anything for awhile. The twins could really use some summer clothes and I need to make items for the swap so that should keep me plenty busy.

I cut out 2 dresses for dd last night- PRR Beach and Munki Beach. At least she cut the PRR which I'm not even that crazy about. I would have been really upset if she ruined the Munki.

That stinks! Ellie threatened to do that once. I swallowed and gambled and said, "Fine, but that will be the LAST dress you get from me, your sisters will get all of them from now on" and she threw the scissors down. It feels like they are breaking your favorite things on purpose when they do that. Try and relax and don't stress over wardrobes too much.

My stomach was in a knot just reading your post. I'm so sorry she did that Amy.

I have your hemp/tencel here and have been meaning to pm you and figure out a play day. PM if you want with what days and times might work for you. It is great fabric for mama stuff so perhaps you can sew for yourself for a bit.

My kids are too young to have gone through this phase yet, but my heart just ached for you reading this. I'm such a mean mama, I would probably make my daughter where the cut up dress a couple of times just to prove a point. Sorry mama, I'm sure she'll comearound once she sees you sewing for the other kids and not her.
