Angry Problem with my embroidery--please help

I have an Iris. I've been trying to work on napkins for my MIL for mother's day. I'm having a terrible time. When the machine just does a chain stitch --like on the redwork type designs--the back (and sometimes top) is really loopy. The bobbin thread seems to be tight, but the top/colored thread is really loopy and it looks terrible on back. I asked at my JoAnn's where I got it. I checked my bobbin thread--all is ok there, thought maybe it wasn't hooped tight enough, but that isn't it, checked my threading, just used a tear away stabilizer (they are just a plain woven fabric.)
ANY ideas?

Guess I'll go back and see if they want to send it off. She said if nothing worked to come back in and they'd send it off. WAHHHH I don't want to send it off!

Please, any suggestions would be greatly appreicated.
thanks,
Carey
