I think dd is allergic to hemp or maybe poly? How many layers of flannel for cd's...

We used disposable diapers for 4 days on our trip to Texas last week and the rash healed (aside from scars ) so I KNOW it's the cloth!!!Ok so dd has been cloth diapered since day 1. She wore cotton prefolds (european prefolds) for 6 months, and for the last 3-4 months she has fought a terrible rash off and on. More ON than off.
I didn't until lately think of the hemp or microfleece...
we use soakers (hemp with micro or suedecloth on top) with PUL covers that are lined in micro/suedecloth.
She didn't have problems with the micro liners, (with prefolds) or PUL covers as an infant, and it seems we had a couple rash free months in hemp too but I don't remember.

I just know for the last 2-3 months she has had a nasty rash... red spots with almost like HOLES that are yellow in center.. like sores.

I have tried everything, yeast medicine, A&D, Weleda Calendula Baby Cream, etc. etc. Different detergent, but we really don't use detergent much, we have a laundry globe... (no detergent... just uses ions in the globe etc. to clean)

I don't believe it's buildup either. I will say though that the hemp smells clean until she PEES in it.. then it STINKS!!!!
I did make a few new soakers and they don't smell when peed like that.. so they are holding something!
I don't know what else to do though with them, I haven't sunned them yet, but I have washed on hot alone over and over and tried other detergent etc.
nothing works.

I made 2 flannel trifolds last night, 4 layers (so 12 layers trifolded) to try.
Is that the right amount of layers absorbency? I've only made them with hemp (or sherpa) in all my years of diaper making.

ANY ANY ANY advice would be great. I'm NOT going to sposies... but I'm almost out of the sposies we have, and I don't want to use the soakers etc. we have been, so I want to make her a new stash this Sunday..
I just need ideas/advice for then.
Thanks!!

I would try flats for awhile, as those get pretty clean, because of only being a single layer. Then, I would let her go without a cover, and change as soon as she wets. You could also try a vinegar rinse with your diapers too. I would definitely sun them if you can.

i don't know anything about the rash, but we've had the hemp stinkies twice. what a pain! i tried everything and then finally i bleached all my hemp and that worked. afterward i ran them through the wash with no detergent or anything several times to make sure the bleach wouldn't be near milo's skin (though i think generations of babies have been diapered in thoroughly bleached dipes with no ill affects). after that they stayed clean for several months, but then recently i had to do it again. good luck!

Gavin never got rashes until we moved. We are using a different washer so I'm pretty sure its not getting the diapers as clean. So it *could* be build up. It could also either be the hemp or the fleece. Try eliminated the fleece first. I've known alot of cloth diapering mamas that have kiddos sensitive to polyester.

Just wanted to update...
First I had tried some new flannel trifolds stuffed in a pocket that had suedecloth inner (polyester) but they were NEW pockets too...
Within 2 diapers she was getting the rash again.
So that tells me (I think lol) that it's the poly.... so we have today and last night tried....
2 flannel trifolds (4 layers) and
6 hemp french terry trifolds (2 layers)
NO polyester (micro or suede) against her (just on the cover inner)
and she hasn't gotten a rash.
Yay! So I'm sooooo hoping it's the poly and not the hemp.
I'm going to keep watching closely.
We are going to do mostly hemp prefolds (only 2 layers) so that I can snappi them and NOT use a cover much, except when out. That will minimize the polyester she has on her skin. She seems fine with the poly as the inner cover fabric, it just can't top the soaker etc...
THANKS a ton mamas for your help!

I'm glad you found the source of her rashes!!! If you want to eliminate her contact with Poly all together you can always switch to wool covers and soakers.

Just a suggestion.
