I am making a shirt by the pattern, but it is too big.

What should I do? I am making a 2t t-shirt for my daughter. I am going by the pattern. But, it is coming out too wide and probably too long. I am sure it will fit her next year, or the year after. Is size 2 different in a pattern than the 2 I would buy in the store?

Lots of pattern company patterns are notorious for being too big. They're *supposed* to correspond to store clothing sizing, but they usually don't. The best thing to do is measure your DD and then compare her measurements to the size on the back of the package. For example, my DD wears a size 3/4 in clothing but I've sewn her stuff that was a size 2 on the package! You could disassemble the shirt and just re-use the same fabric with the smaller size pattern.

to add to what FAith said are you using 5/8 seam allowances? Your serger (I seem to recall that you have a serger) sews a 1/4 seam allowance and the big 3 patterns call for a 5/8 SA. that make a big difference in size.

But overall, the big 3 usually run big

If you're already sewing it, I've been known to just take the seams in a bit until it fits. Just cut a half inch off or so, and then wing it, but then again, that's not always the most precise way. The safest bet is probably to use the pieces you have and cut out the smaller size, if that's part of your pattern.

Okay thanks. I will hem this one up, finish the sleeves, and save it for when she is bigger.

I will take the pattern and adjust it to her size more.

I do have a serger, but I have been doing a stitch with the sewing machine first so I can go by the sewing threads and that is where I serge, cutting the thread off with my serger.
It is a good thing I bought 4yrds of this $1. material at Walmart to try out before I use the $3. a yard stuff.

Actually sizing on patterns and sizing on RTW are NOT the same, and the pattern companies don't purport to use the same sizing as RTW. It is always a good rule of thumb to measure the intended wearer, and then check against the measurements on the package. Also, if you are worried the pattern looks too big, you could measure it against a shirt that fits nicely, and make changes from there.

Just wanted to add that I would compare measurements to actual pattern pieces (minus seam allowance, of course). I have compared measurements to the back and STILL had the end result come out all wrong Lesson learned...
