I used to have a "Shade Book" but I think it was recently donated.

I think I picked it up at JoAnn's or something like that 5+ years ago.

Would a trip to the library be possible? Personally, I'm a wimp when it comes to takeing the kids to the library to do research for myself, I'll only do it with one kids.

Are these the fabric shade that is flat and sort of folds itself up as you pull the string? If that is the style you mean I can try to give you basic directions.

Yes!!! (LOL) I think these are such a nice look but checked them out recently and for our odd size window they wanted over $300!!!! Can you believe it? I'd appreciate any advice you could give.

Ok- here goes with kiddo interuptions so if it isn't clear let me know!
1. cut a piece of 2x2 wood the width of your window
2. cut your fabric the length of your window + 15" or so by the width of the window + 1"
3. mark along the length every 10" (you can alter this number to make the folds longer or shorter)
4. now fold right sides together along the first 10" line and sew a 1/4" seam
5. repeat for each 10" mark- you will have a long length of fabric with horizontal seams
6. hem the 2 sides by turning under 1/4" and than another 1/4"
7. hem the bottom by turning under twice
8. hem top edge- only need to turn under once
9. wrap the top edge around the wood piece and staple from the back
10. put a small screw eye (3 total) near each end of the wood and one at the center point along the bottom edge - visible on the back side
11. tie a knot in the bottom of a LONG piece of thin nylon cord and then with a thick needle you start at the bottom most horizontal seam left side and go up to the next seam, up to the next and continue up the left side through each seam then thru the screw eye on the left, the middle screw eye, the right screw eye
12. with another piece of string do the same thing through the mid point of the width of the seam all the way up thru the middle screw eye and then the right screw eye
13. with a third string, repeat going up the back right side seams, thru the right screw eye
14. now gather the 3 strings together evenly and tie a knot at the bottom- you can trim them later after shade is hung and you see how long you want them. You can also add a decorative bead or something before you knot 'em.
15. I hung mine by 2 screw eyes inserted at the ends of top edge of wood, and 2 hooks inserted into inner top window frame
16. I attached a hook to the outer, right side of window frame to keep the pull strings in place.
Does this make sense? They are really simple to make! I didn't have a pattern, just saw them at Ikea and studied them for a few minutes so that I could copy 'em...

you can also attach them to the baton with stick n sew velcro so you can wash them... if so PREWASH!

I make casings in mine from side to side and then thread dowels though. This makes a crisper shade when pulled up.
