Before I cut these jeans...
...I need to know where to cut them! LOL I know that I need to cut the waistband off, but on the leg, do I cut along the big, thick seam, or do I cut that out? I was curious because it seems like if I cut the seam out, it will open up the pocket and I don't really want to fix that. Any help would be appreciated!

Re: Before I cut these jeans...
Thanks mama! I wound up ripping the side seam apart, per a friend's advice, but I'm going to do another pair and do it the way you did yours, that's much more straightfoward!

Can someone tell me *why* the waistband needs to go? LOL I have a pair of pre-baby jeans all ready to be chopped, but it seems that I could just cut out the side seam, then cut through the waistband in that one spot... then start the panel at the waist... and still use the button and zipper?
Does that even make sense (I can *see* it, but it's hard to explain clearly! LOL) I just really don't want to mess with the waistband if I don't have to. LOL!!

I don't think the waist band need to go. I took mine out because the rise on those jeans was way too long, the crotch hung down mid thigh. Although, if you don't take the waist out, how will the jeans stay up? If you cut to the top and add a strip all the way, it will make the waist bigger. Even if you cut the same size and just add a different material it seems like it would alter the tension to much. Hmmm, anyone have any thoughts on this?

The waistband doesn't have to go and I advise against doing it unless you really want it that way. *I* cut my waistband off because I wanted them to be drawstring in case I gain or lose weight, KWIM? But I had such a hard time with it that I gave up and put elastic which I absolutely hate. I made a pair for Kaylie and didn't take the waistband off and they're fine. If you aren't planning on taking the waistband off, I would definitely use a pair of jeans that are a size or two too small so that when you add the panel part to the waist, they aren't too big, KWIM? That's how I did Kaylie's. She had outgrown the pair that I used so I just added the amount of fabric on the panel that she needed to make them fit. I hope this makes sense, LOL. If you have any ?'s feel free to PM me.
Thanks ladies! The jeans I'm planning to use are at least one size too small (Actually, they're size 6, so they're 2 sizes small. LOL), so I figured if I add an inch or two at the waist, it'll allow them to fit. LOL
I think I'll try them with the waistband left on, and the panels starting at the waist.... hopefully it'll turn out to be the easy way.

I have a pair that the waist band was left in (I ddin't make them) and they work great. But then a gain my jeans are always too big around the waist in order to fit my hips so I guess my hips hold the pants up! LOL
I do like the look of the drawstring better but the widened waist band works well for me (and would definatly be easier to do)

Amina, I just cut the tiny seam out of mine. My patches started at about 2" at the top and gradually got larger to about 5" at the bottom on my first pair of pants. I did a second pair last night and made all the patches 4".

Re: Before I cut these jeans...
I used all 4" squares from top to bottom. I split the waistband at the seam (that I had opened) and now I'm faced with the task of piecing the panels in. It's going to make the waist HUGE, so I think I might put 2 pieces of elastic on each side to gather the waist so they don't fall down. I could probably use a belt, but I'd have to pull it extra tight! But, I didn't fade the panels up, from a few inches to more at the ankle because I don't look good in bell bottoms. LOL I hope that was a little help!
