I am not sure if I should make an elastic waste skirt or a wrap around skirt - neither of which I have made before.

I am thinking an elastic waste skirt would be easier wouldn't it? I tried to find a free pattern on line but couldn't find one. Does anyone know of any?

Also what would be the best lightweight - non-see through (I only want one layer) material to use?

Well, I've never made one before, but I would think wrap might be easier to fold open and get off if you want it off for some reason. (I always get nutty at the end of labor and want things on and off.) But I've never made a wrap skirt.

If elastic seams easier, you might want to do that. I think there is a sew-along thread somewhere for a gored skirt. Or you could just do a rectangle and add elastic.

I have a wrap skirt I plan on using while in labor. It will be easy to put on and off while going in and out of the tub, bed, etc. I figure I'll only want something on if I'm walking around. Though I may end up making a shorter one instead.

So my opinion is wrap skirt - though elastic waist is easier to make.

As for fabrics, I think any calicos would be nice. Just hold them up to the light in the store before you buy them, if you can make stuff out clearly, they're too thin!

I would/did combine the best of both. I used a batik fabric- dark colors and already a splotchy look to it

Take a rectangle that is about 1.75 times around your hips x the length you want (knee, calf, ankle) Make an elastic casing around top edge. Finish sides and hem. Put it behind you and wrap it around crossing over the front. Mark where you would need snaps on each side and apply them. Your done. That way you have the comfort of elastic and can step in and out of it but it will open or break away completely when you want it to.
