Fake fly, Thanks, etc...
I've been a lurker for some time now after being away for a couple of years. I have learned so much from all of you! I had just about given up on sewing for my boys - normal patterns never fit right - and THEN I discovered Ottobre from this board!!! I am love their boys styles and am addicted!
Anyway, I'm about to make #19/issue 1/2004 - Up until now I have always put in zippers, but since my 4 yr old doesn't even bother with using a zipper most of the time, I want to try to do a fake fly. Is there any tips/secrets to do this? I don't exactly enjoy puting zippers in, so I'm excited to make these today without.
Thanks!
I saved this from years ago. I don't even remember for sure who wrote it... perhaps Darla....

P.S. Here are the mock fly instructions - may not be back on later today (Ignore the part about left or right side--I've never seen a fly open from the left in my life & don't know where she gets that from): ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~
Pattern Alteration:
1. Trace the front pattern pieces, as is, but don't cut them out yet. Leave some extra tracing paper near the crotch for alterations.
2. Mark the centre front.
3. Measure and draw a line 4-6cms out from the centre front along the top edge. Smaller sizes 4cms, larger 5cms and teenagers 6cms.
4. Draw a line parallel to the centre front down from this mark, keeping it at an equal distance, ie the 4-6cms
5. Now curve the extension back to the original seam, at the point where the crotch seam starts to curve.
6. Place a mark (large circle) about 1cm above where the extension curves back.
Construction:
7. Cut out both your front pieces with this extension.
8. Join the lower front crotch seam up to your large circle. Don't back stitch, but pull the threads to the wrong side and tie off.
9. Overlock or sew the front seam together around the outside of the fly extension.
10. Press the fly to the left for boys, right for girls. (I hope I got this right, I can never remember <bg>)
11. Topstitch along the folded edge of the fly.
12. From the right side topstitch the fly shape, following the lines of the extension, gently curving in to the large circle. Pivot, sew three stitches along the centre front, pivot again and sew back up to the top keeping the stitching an equal distance apart. I always mark the two sewing lines before I start.
13. Add bar tacks if desired.

Thanks for the replies... the instructions sounded a bit confusing, so I winged it. They turned out great! I cut out the pattern normally, *(except for the fly shield) and basically just folded the fly parts on top of each other and double stitched where the fly would have been. Really easy. Wish I had a digital camera...
Thanks again!
