Barb & Shalon ~ Drawstring Elastic sew-along

Drawstring elastic cut and ready to be sewn. This is for shorts for Nathan, whose waist is 22" ~ elastic is cut to 19".

I zig-zag the cut ends of the elastic together above and below the drawstring being careful not to catch the string in the stitching.

What it looks like when it's zig-zagged.

I mark the half and quarter way points for reference while serging elastic to waist of shorts.

Serge elastic to shorts.

Turn the waistband down and mark where the drawstring hits on the shorts. Mark a small distance from the center front seam, then apply a bit of interfacing to stabilize where your buttonholes will go.

Make and cut open the buttonholes.

Pull the strings through and knot the ends.

My machine has an automatic buttonhole function, it's easy-peasy.

Ooooohhh, thanks for a great sew along Jayme!!! I am making lounge pants for several people of xmas gifts, and I really need to use the drawstring elastic, so I don't have to be perfect with waist measurements

This is great--now I need some drawstring elastic! Anyone have suggested sources?

(Sorry about the tiny sig pic--I really am trying to figure out pictures but I'm making very slow progress. Teaser: it's a picture of me dressed in a carrot suit from my local paper!)
