Does anyone here do hand embroidery? I'd love to learn since it's going to be YEARS before I will have the $ for an embroidery machine.
Is there a book or something that I can use?

I don't use an embroidery machine, but I use my regular sewing machine to do embroidery (haven't in a while -Selena's too proficient, lol) There are lots of web sites for free-hand machine embroidery - one even has a video. And I got a big book of iron-on tranfers to use as templates for stuff. It's a lot faster than embroidering by hand, though it does take some practice to get it too look even and nice. HTH!

I did find something online from Singer I believe that covers that. I'll look around, I know I printed it out.
What sort of stitches are you wanting to do for lettering? I've done satin stitch, cross stitch, and backstitch as well as some couching when embroidering letters. They are all incredibly easy. Basically all you need is a letter style. There's tons of links for different alphabets online. One of favorite is a celtic script generator for cross stitch patterns at http://www.celticxstitch.ie/cgi-bin/stitches.cgip
I enjoy hand embroidering. I usually use a marker with water soluble ink (lines stay until you wet it) and just draw or write what I want to embroider.
I just got my dd the Klutz book called Simple Embroidery. It's very clear and easy to understand...and has all the basic stitches. I have a few books on embroidery but they are harder to understand.
