Question Can thread be too old to use?

I just found a wooden thread rack at the thrift store. I bought it for the rack, the thread was a side dish. Anyway this rack has 70+ spools of thread. Some of it is old as I can tell by old style font labels and wooden spools, rather than modern day plastic. Does thread weaken or break with age or you think it will be ok to use in sewing machine and/or hand sewing? most of it is coats & clark some brands I don't recognize. I ask because sometimes clothing elastic breaks down & other fibers too.

Yes it does. Pick one up and give some a quick tug to see how easily/quickly it breaks. IMHO the thread is trash. Or at least that is my experience with my mother's and both grandmothers stash of thread.

I'd be happy to take the wooden spools off your hands if you don't want them.

i have used some of my great grandma's thread without a problem, but not sure if it would hold up in diapers or anything... my mom recently made dd a sock monkey and i think her thread is rotten (easily could have been from my great gma also) because several seams have split for no apparent reason.
so, yeah, use with caution
